  • What's the deal with all these Discord servers popping up?

Every game forum I see multiple posts about some different Discord branded server.

  • Creating a variable and using it to pick using an instance variable comparison is a simple method.

You can name the value anything you like.

  • "All depends on how one approaches their business. Not saying Ashley and Tom should go open source, though! (I certainly wouldn't mind, and I'd sponsor them with a $10 a month, like I do Blender)."

So that model depends a bit on people giving them money every month?

  • I'll have to try that sometime.

Magically make a living by making my code open source.

Why is everyone saying this? On Greenlight the "little guy" had to pay $100 so he could enter a voting system and MAYBE get his game on Steam. Right now, even though they say the price is going to be between $100 and $5000, it's very likely the little guy will still pay $100, but this time he gets his game on Steam ASAP.

So why is it that everyone is saying that?

Well it's not a one time fee anymore.

  • If scirra drops support for it one day, you will simply not be able to use the editor on any of your game projects- even if you want to pay.

The dependency on chrome is another factor altogether

The only way that will happen is if Scirra goes out of business.

Understandably the thing they are likely to drop support of is the free version of C2.

  • I agree with Rayek on this one!

That paid subscription model - quite on the contrary guarantees that one day you will no longer be able to open your game project. History has shown us many times - users being left out to dry

It does not in any way help your project or you. It's there simply to lock you on continued payment, regardless if you actually make money from the game engine or not or need to update it for new features.

I would be ok if the rent payments were so that the engine gets new features. But they really aren't - the developer can then continue charging you simply for using the software. Once they have enough users locked to that model, they will no longer worry about meeting any feature requests - as pressure on their side to improve the software so people buy the update is gone.

One day when they decide to drop support for the software, even if you want to pay rent- you will be locked out of the house - with all of your stuff still in it.

If Scirra goes away, and Chrome makes an update that breaks all your C2 games, how far up the creek will you be?

  • Im confused.

Are you expecting that they wrote a new wrapper?

  • Well you have to consider your target platform.

While it would be great to be able to export to the major consoles, you have to be realistic in that they won't accept anything that isn't of a really high standard.

To make things worse, I don't think they are as critical on 3d as they are with 2d. Minecraft would be a good example.

  • From the blog:

"Anyone who buys Construct 2 from today until Construct 3's release will get their first year of Construct 3 for free. To make it a no-brainer, we're also putting Construct 2 on sale for $99. So there's no reason to wait!"

I wonder how much Fusion 3 will be?

Not that the timing of this thread isn't a bit conspicuous already.

  • See where it says 5454?

  • I'm sure it will happen eventually.

At the moment the Pi is still a bit underpowered for Construct 2 projects.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • They can't guarantee a third party's work any more than the post office delivering mail on expected days.

You can expect the performance to be the same as that of the developer.

  • Gobbled up by a bigger fish is the biggest worry to me.

    Something to consider.

If Scirra was a publicly traded company, would you want them to use the subscription model or the one off license one?

  • There's third party plugs already for generation, including one that uses the Sfxr code base.

We just need editors to work with them better. In C3 hopefully.

I need to say that the generation does come at a cost to cpu usage, but it should be quite useful in moderation.
