Mr Nice's Forum Posts

  • Hi everyone.

I am really sad i cannot play any of the C2 games since the Chrome 36 update. This is so annoying and i wonder how many other HTML5 games out there are broken.

This has me re-evaluating the whole HTML5 game idea. I am seriously wondering if it's worth investing in. If Google can do this with such impunity, then can sure do it again in the future. I am in no way suggesting the problem lies with Scirra. I believe that the Gamemaker HTML5 export module also has to be rebuilt and their games published with it don't work either.

The dream of developing with one code base for all browsers maybe is just a dream after all

  • Many thanks mepis. I will check those two out.

When you have the time, please could you tell me if C2 supports those 2 solutions and how easy is it to place them inside a game?

  • This is quite worrying for HTML5 developers. So Google throws a spanner in the works anytime, and thousands of games have to be updated / recompiled to work? I have the latest Chrome, Firefox and Opera and most of the fun games i liked simply FREEZE in moments upon playing. My graphics card is not that recent - about 2 years old - but the machine is only 8 months old. Ashley is a genius and deserves a Knighthood for such a great HTML5 engine, but i bet he's sweating a little if Google can do this with impunity to game devs.

I have still to decide yet whether to buy C2 which is awesome.

  • Can anyone advise on the best type of advertising for games that will be self hosted.

Is there a way to use in-game advertising from playing in browsers of PC's, MACs and Tablets.

    Thanks

  • Thanks BluePhaze and shinkan. Glad to see this is possible

  • BluePhaze, does C2 have a way to time individual sprite frames ie all sprites running at 1/10 except frame 9 which runs at 5/10 thanks

  • I've been playing a lot of point n click games recently. One which i really liked was called THE WOK. It's available on fastgames. Another was Tiny Wheel. These little gems are niche but i'd like to know if such game logic and mechanics could be created with C2.

And so i ask the more advanced users in the hope of a resounding YES!

But please be honest here and don't be afraid to make a man cry. <img src="smileys/smiley19.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Many thanks Ashley. Got it!

  • Thanks for replies folks.

Ashley, i do understand the difference between file size and memory use. What i don't get is why a reasonable mid range PC or Mac should choke on it. I've done some research on the app store and many interactive kids book apps are way over 100mb and targeted for iPads, and they get rave reviews. I also know many are being developed in Cocos2d(Objective C) and Cocos2D-X(C++). I come from a design and web dev background with some exp of Flash too. As much as i'd love to code with AS 3.0 for AIR and use something like Starling for GPU accelerated performance, C2 seems such an easier option. It has all i need and the only question hangs on my original question. Is it the users PC ram or graphics card that determines performance with a C2 created game / app?

    Thanks

  • If i am targeting Desktops / Laptops only for my games / interactive book apps, can i feel free to use large background images (1024x768)x 32 scenes, and will i have any issues with large animated sprites 200x200 plus?

I know that iPad memory is improving all the time too and i would like to target that device assuming Safari browser could handle C2 creations.

    Thanks

  • Thank you everyone for your feedback.

I am hoping that soon, someone will be able to showcase their interactive book app and therefore set a benchmark for future projects of a similar nature. I might need a developer partner until i can master C2. Been looking at Stencyl too, bit it also hasn't got anything to showcase either other than 2D games. C2 definitely seems the easier user-friendly option and being HTML5, it's definitely the future as devices become more powerful and memory isn't such an issue.

  • Thanks again folks! maybe i should take a closer look at C2 before giving up. I am hoping to create an interactive app with similar behaviours to this one as seen on youtube demo video

I'd love to know if you think Construct could create such interactivity.

  • Thanks for your replies guys.

I really want to use C2 and support Scirra as they're from my home town of London. <img src="smileys/smiley17.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Hi folks.

After reading forum replies over these last months, i see that C2 was and is specifically made for 2D games. As an illustrator / Designer i was hoping to use it to create a 20 - 32 page illustrated book app for iPad, with animated sprites and other interactivity.

I now know this is an impossibility because it's clear from many forum answers that tiled backgrounds are the way to go with backgrounds. There is little mention of large static backgrounds in particular, ones that would be appropriate for iPad retina display. And yet such apps have been created for iOS and Adroid for iPhones, iPads Tablets etc weighing in at well over 200mb. But i guess they have been developed with something like Cocos 2D or other native SDK. I am disappointed because C2 is so easy for a non developer like me. I have also looked at Stencyl and again, forum replies are mixed and vague - some saying it's doable and others saying it could be achieved.

I appreciate 99.9% of C2 users are here for 2D Games, and so it seems i have to look at Corona SDK or Gideros Mobile.

Before i make a final farewell to Scirra, i'd appreciate any feedback that might change my mind, but only if my above usage is doable.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
