  • But I think I will host sprites on my website is what I'm getting at.

Well, just don't put up any sprites that you haven't gotten permission from the creators.

This is probably the major reason why there aren't any free sprite sites out there. That, and spriting is a lot of work. That work is usually being used for a specific project that the creators don't want being used in other things.

Sure, every once in a while you'll come across someone who says "hey use these sprites for whatever you want." I guess if you hunt around you might be able to collect enough of those.

But really, any semi-serious game designer isn't going to be using sprite packs anyway. There's quite a stigma against using pre-made sprites. Just browse around any board out there with free games, and you'll see folks getting flamed for the practice.

And yes, things like RPG Maker and MMF have free sprite and tile packs that they give out, but nothing of any quality has ever been made with them. And be fore you say "but," I'll reiterate... not one single thing.

If you're putting together a game resource site, I'd ditch posting links to pre-made content and concentrate on putting together a comprehensive list of tools and tutorials. But that's just me.

  • There is no public domain sprite site that I know of.

If you're serious about making your game as good as possible, don't use someone else's sprites. Do one of these:

    1. Take the time to practice spriting, and it'll eventually get faster and easier, and in the end you'll be able to be more proud of your project.

    2. Make your game with crappy temporary sprites and stick figures. Polish the gameplay as much as you can. Then show it around to some sprite art or game making forums (like this one) and ask if anyone is interested in collaborating with you. Do NOT ask around for artists help with a game that hasn't had some serious work put into it. There are a lot of sprite artists interested in working on projects, but nobody, ever, will offer their help unless they see your efforts first.

A couple good places to start learning to sprite on your own would be

    http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/

    http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/

There are tons of tutorials from everything on color palettes to optimizing your workflow, and people will always give you feedback on your work. Likewise, those would be good places to go when you get your game engine up and running smoothly if you want to solicit help.

Protip: Become active in the forums wherever you go before you go pimping out your game looking for contributors. Most places will shun you if you show up and say "Hey, I'm looking for an artist" on your first post.

  • Well that depends, you want polygons or NURBS? Procedural, spherical, or UV mapping? Real-time rendering or raytrace?

    (Construct can't make spheres. It's a 2D program.)

  • I did notice, but those are pretty cool effects regardless

  • There is an option to change the default controls in Construct during runtime isn't there?

Not yet, I believe Ash has said there are plans for this.

  • The idea for the chain is awesome, I didn't even think of that, though will the 3d object support 24bit alpha PNG and leave the transparency?

Yep. I made some flower sprites with correct depth/parallax on some 3d platforms that way once.

    WSAD are standard FPS controls.

...and are generally used in conjunction with the mouse. If you're planning on going for mouse aim and shoot, that'll work just fine. Otherwise arrow keys are generally used in non-mouse games. It's a good standard, most people find it comfortable that way.

Whenever I play a non-mouse game with WASD it just seems awkward, and whenever I play a mouse game with arrow keys it's equally awkward.

    Moot point really, though.

  • Well, did it work out for you?

  • You could make mouse-aim just bend her torso, arms, and head ever so slightly in conjunction so that you get a decent range for firing. There could be a min/max angle for firing so it doesn't break the animation on the sprite, which means that you'd still have to move up/down in order to get things out of range.

As for the chain sprite, make it the front face of another 3D box (leave the other faces blank) and it'll sort itself out

  • These are all good ideas, but this one is the one I need most:

-Pressing enter in the action window should not only work for "next" but also for "finnish".

I still hit Enter all the time expecting it to finish out the window .

-Insert new condition, Insert sub-event, invert condition, insert event, insert comment, insert group, and include event sheet should be replaced by; Condition, Sub-event, Invert, Event, Comment, Group and Event sheet.

Yep, quick-scanning the dropdown is pretty annoying because it's all

    In...

    In...

    In...

    In...

    In...

    In...

Takes like a matter of milliseconds extra, but that's a huge gap mentally where's you're just thinking to yourself "dammit this is slow. Why does everything start with 'in' " So it's not really all that much slower, it just seems that way if you get my drift, which is just as important.

  • As far as I know, Evolution Theory says that we evolved by monkeys and several other creatures.

That's casting it in a rather simple light. Do yourself a favor and study up on the material. At the very least, it'll make arguing your point of view easier.

Also, is an explosion came out of nowhere, what is the source of it? And if you find a scentific solution explaining the source of the explosion, what is the source of the source of the explosion? It's impossible to explain everything with science.

Actually it's possible to explain everything with science, it's just not probable that humans will be able to. Even so, that's hardly a reason to jump from point A to point Z by saying "God did it." It's a dangerous assumption. Science may be the slow route, but it's safe. It takes us through point B, point C etc., confirming each point before moving on to the next. I'd say we're getting close to D by now.

Also, why ChemicalA + ChemicalB = ReactionC? You can explain what happens, but not why.

Actually, you can. It helps to be a chemist though.

Anyway, I don't mean to say there isn't any place for God in the world or anything like that. I just don't see any place for God in the physical world. Let God rule over the spiritual realm. Some people need Him, let Him be there for them. That's all good. There's nothing wrong with spirituality, it's the Creation myth and Church dogma that I mainly have problems with.

  • Evolution theory is just silly, for me. We aren't monkeys :S

    Nobody said we were.

Also God is much more likely than a explosion that came out of nowhere.

And may I ask why that is?

  • Sorry it took so long, I couldn't use my Construct computer all day yesterday, so I just whipped this up in the last twenty minutes. It seems pretty solid, but I know it could probably be cleaned up a little (especially the centering-on-ladder code, it's a bit redundant having it occur twice). At the very least it should give you an idea of where to go from here.

    http://www.fileshack.us/get_file.php?id ... ladder.cap

The whole thing's commented, but if you have any questions just ask.

But yeah, everyone posting suggestions in this thread were pretty much on the right track, except I used Set Speed in the Y direction instead of manually setting the Y position (that could cause problems with clipping into solids).

  • The thing with the walls disappearing is weird... it's just a tiled background image, not sure why it's doing that :/

That's a problem that's been around for a while now. I first encountered it back when making LHiT (I think I reported it... I can't remember now). I haven't made much with Construct since then, at least not stuff with tiled bg's, so I was just now reminded that the problem even exists.

  • That does indeed look awesome, but it chokes a little on my machine. every second or so it seems to skip frames.

Then again, so does the Plasma object if start to add effects.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Just to make a point clear: the "church" and individual faith are to different things. The church isn't necessarily a "good thing" i.e. the crusades and Roman Catholicism enforcing their faith by the sword.

Oh I know, that's why I'm aiming my sights at the Church and not at individuals.
