Ever heard of Minecraft?

  • Tried it.

    Addicted.

  • Been meaning to try this out for like, ever.

Someone in chat mentioned something about it a few days back... I thought I hadn't heard of it before until I watched the video and realised I had seen it prior.

The multiplayer survival aspect sounds particularly interesting.

I suppose it is worth keeping an eye on this one... could prove to be a bit of fun

  • So, we need a server going.

Edit: Darnation, Minecraft Alpha doesn't have MP client out yet... Here is consolation prize:

  • Is Snow a new thing?

I played around with MineCraft Yesterday just to get used to everything, and Today I started my real go.

I hadn't seen any snow in the videos I've watched, but there was plenty of snow going on in my world.

    Looks great at night:

BTW, if you're wondering what happened to my energy, I was extending the basement area when I somehow let about 5 or 6 zombies through a wall.

I'm not sure exactly how many there was, because I ran away with my single heart left.

I know I saw a zombie generator down there, so I've got to sort it out later.

    Krush.

Well, it doesn't have survival mode multiplayer yet, but Alpha still has a form of multiplayer (The main differences between it and single player are that it runs in God mode with no monsters, only animals).

You can download the server program here: http://www.minecraft.net/download/Minecraft_Server.exe

    Is Snow a new thing?

I think it has been around for a couple of versions, but at the moment there isn't a weather transition/season system so if you start with a snow world, it stays snowing forever. I've also seen rain in Minecraft in a video on the youtube channel of the guy who is making the game, but haven't managed to generate a world with it yet myself.

  • I just got this and have no idea what I'm doing... I've spent the first three nights so far in my little "box" I made... now attempting to span this big ocean by making a bridge.

I have no weapons, lights, anything like that...

    HALP! xD

    This is a must. :p

  • Sol,

I've mentioned the YouTube videos by davidr64yt in this thread already.

I suggest taking a look at the first 4 or 5 and then going back to the game before watching anymore (you don't want to spoil all the surprises).

    Subscribe to Construct videos now

His videos are a great introduction to the basics, and he's recording while he's learning it himself, so it's quite funny in places.

BTW, Notch (the author of MineCraft) just announced that MineCraft has now sold 100,000 copies!!!

And he met with Valve today in America.

Now that's an indie dev success story.

I just love this game, and I just love what he's got planned for future updates.

For comparison, see my first post in this thread. lol

    Krush.

  • Notch used to livestream himself playing minecraft while talking about future updates, those were always pretty funny.

I own a copy of this, and when multiplayer alpha has enemy mobs, some friends and I are going to have a LAN dedicated to it. :p

  • Yeah I caved later on after that post and looked at some wiki stuff. Now I have the basics, like workbenches and stuff, a few weapons and a stack of resources.

My "dwelling" is rather large now as well, and I have an underground "dig site" in my basement I will tunnel until I reach HELL! xD

I'm really excited about the online multiplayer prospects as well. All I can envision is Lord of the Flies, hahah

  • I will tunnel until I reach HELL!

Be careful - that is actually possible in this game.

Not only reaching lava, you can also on occasion tunnel past the bottom of the map. If that happens, you'll fall to your death and lose all your items.

If you dig down and see what looks like sky, just fill it back up :p

My efforts on reaching HELL have been slowed, as there is a swiss-cheese of caverns below my (now) fortress of stone and glass.

Dredging underground water flows to meet with lava for the birth of obsidian still eludes me, but as I place my 300th torch to light the walls of the caverns of the damned, I press on past veins of wealth in the stoney walls. Only when I reach the end and know it is safe will I flourish in my spoils as I craft the ultimate armour set and wield the mightiest blade.

So yeah, Minecraft has consumed me... at least for now. xD

  • OK so, I just found out what you can do with redstone... the future potential of the scope for this game is amazing.

Now, if only I can figure out which .class file to edit in order to get the hi-def texture packs working in the latest version, I would be a happy man indeed.
