  • Hi all,

First post so I hope I'm not going to upset anyone by asking about comparisons with a competing product <img src="smileys/smiley17.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> I've been using Multimedia Fusion 2 (and variants of it) for years, going all the way back to the Klik 'n' Play days.

While I like the program and find it easy enough to make fairly complex games in (and to this day my knowledge of "proper programming" is fairly minimal), it is pretty clunky and awkward at times, and I've been thinking of moving on. I've heard nothing but good stuff about Construct 2, but I just wondered if anyone who's used both could tell me how they compare.

Is Construct 2 any more/less powerful in terms of what it can do, is it easier to handle stuff like random number generation and algorithms (I do a lot of RPG-style stuff and the number-crunching in MMF can be frustrating), is there a built-in sprite and animation editor (one thing I do really like about MMF2)?

I know there is a free version which I have downloaded so I can find out for myself, and I do intend to over the next few weeks, but I just wanted to get an honest appraisal from someone who's used both.

  • I also used to use MMF2 which is really out of date now.

A heck of alot of that stuff that is really clunky to handle in MMF2 is a lot quicker to do in Construct.

However I would say MMF would still be better if you focus on desktop .exe applications but then there is Construct Classic for that.

I find expressions easier to work with in Construct as well.

  • I've used both. In my opinion, construct is vastly superior. Sub events alone would be enough to have convinced me, but also objects can have named variables and as many of them as you want, the behaviors aren't useless because they aren't buggy and actually work, none of that spread value nonsense to get multiple instances working, event sheet includes, no broken object references, local variables, updates every week or two, the list goes on and on.

I don't mean to bash MMF, but it was so frustrating to work with. I felt like I was fighting it more than I was making a game with it. C2 in comparison, glides.

Tommyttk - perhaps you missed that C2 can export to exe (and Mac and Linux) via node webkit.

  • oh I know I can export to exe of course, and construct is superior in the ways you mention. But there are a lot of extensions for MMF to handle other data files on a local system that construct 2 (but not Construct Classic) currently lacks.

  • Thanks very much for the replies, from what I've read of Construct 2 that was the impression I was getting. Look forward to working with it!

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Tommyttk - true about the built-in local file capabilities. There is a plugin someone made that enables local file manipulation via node webkit, though.

  • Just wanted to say that I've been using C2 for about a month now and I absolutely love it - like Arima said, having come from MMF it just feels like being set free :) I'm resurrecting long-abandoned projects and getting ideas for new ones all the time.

GJ developers, I hope this program keeps evolving and gets all the success it deserves.
