• Hello!

Downloading constructor is literally my first step toward doing anything game related. My current workstation is a 2011 MacBook air running bootcamp with one external monitor. And I am interested in gathering some tools to help me build games. What are some easy to use and cheap/free software that can do the following?

    1) Draw stuff. I am perfectly happy making simple art--as if it came out of MS paint. But I am looking for something slightly more powerful as MS paint doesn't allow free rotation (it's by 90 degrees only). Also, I would love to be extract faces/people from photographs. Yes, my friends agreed to let me put them into the game.

    2) Record sound. I do have a record on the MacBook, and I think it would be funny to generate some of the sound effects with my vocal cords, e.g. "Pew pew pew!" What is the best way capture recordings and convert them to the appropriate file types? Though, I'd be interesting in knowing how more advanced sounds and music are made too.

    3) Record game play. I've seen lots of neat demos on Youtube from the Constructor Community. How did everyone capture their videos? I have Microsoft Expression suite at home, so something similar would be great!

By the way, I'm super excited to have found Constructor. I love how the software and the tutorial let me make a game in one day without any previous experience. Though, I learned that I literally missed the sale by a day. Do you know how often the software gets discounted? Of course, I have zero qualms about supporting Constructor. But finding savings is always great.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Welcome to the wonder ful world of Constrictor!

For number one I would suggest Photoshlop. Its a little high end, but that's just how we roll around here.

For number two I would say Audiggity.

It has all the basics for mixing sounds.

Not sure what to tell you to use for number 3.

Safe to say there's tons of options out there.

Why I've even see a Itube with someone using their Wephone.

  • Response to 3

I really recommend Camstasia studio, it's very easy to use.

  • Hi... I am new here too and I'm loving Construct so far! Here is my advice for the software(s) that you're asking about.

    1. There are a few to name for this but ultimately most people will probably recommend Photoshop. If however you cannot get the 'student' version or simply cannot afford it. Look at GIMP (Link: http://www.gimp.org/)

If you have any trouble with those feeling too complex, have a look at Paint.net (Link: http://www.getpaint.net/) but I am not sure if this one works on Mac or not...

    2. There are so many tools out there that fit your feature requirements for this. I will name some below... Although Audacity (Link: http://audacity.sourceforge.net) is probably one of the most popular free Audio recording/editing applications out there.

    Ardour - http://ardour.org/

    LMMS - http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

There are other *paid* softwares like:

    Reason

    Fruity Loops

Reaper - This one offers a discounted license and is worth looking into! http://lmms.sourceforge.net/

There are more but that should do for now :P

    3. I would say Camtasia Studio as it's pretty much the best one out there but it comes with a fairly large price tag. If you want free I would suggest... CamStudio. An open source screen recording software.

    CamStudio - http://camstudio.org/

Well I hope that helps you out with what to use/get =]

  • Thanks for the help guys! I think I will start with paint.net, it should hold me over for a while. And I will try to save money for Photoshop too. :)

Thanks for the links to the audio programs. I will try them all out.

Man, I have so much stuff I need to learn. Feeling a little daunted, but mostly excited. :D

  • Try Construct 3

Yeah it can get like that sometimes, just remember, baby steps! It'll all come to you soon enough just keep at it and practicing/learning what you can when you can =]

    Good Luck :P

  • Patriick You pasted the lmms link in place of the reaper one ;)

Btw I agree that reaper is a neat little thing worth checking out

You can even have a fully custom interface, which is really cool for an inspiring creative environment
