• Its very hard unless you get lucky to make money with your android games and apps. The road to building a decent income is long and hard but can be done. Here are some minimum requirements if you don't want to let luck determine what your going to make money off of. It might seem like a lot of work but marketing is really the only way to accomplish earning a decent income off of apps and helps with the luck factor.

    Minimum Marketing Requirements

    1) Post in various app stores that have good traffic. Besides Googleplay there are other stores that have good traffic and promotional deals. Appstores such as Slideme , Samsung and Amazon all have decent traffic .

(Now only Amazon has decent traffic the others not as much )

    2) Post in many different Android forums such as xda-developers,making money with android and androidpitt. Even though this might not get you a ton of downloads most appstores place apps higher on charts that have a good amount of link backs to the app page. This is the missing link in ASO that developers forgot.

    3) Post on social media like facebook ,instagram and twitter. Posting in these places will only get you a few download but its helps with the LUCK factor. Social Media is mainly the way most games and apps go VIRAL.

    4) Art- not a marketing strategy per say but high quality artwork in your games , apps and most importantly your icon will draw in much more users to your app.

    5) Youtube video's - Having a youtube video so users caan see the functionality of your games and apps is a free way of getting more users to your game or app. Also youtube is a gateway to help your game or app go VIRAL especially if the artwork is high quality.

There are more ways to market and promote your games and apps but this is a list of basic marketing you must do in order to make money with android.

  • Good to know! Thanks for sharing!

  • Exactly what Ad services are you using?

I heard Admob generates very little income compared to Charboost and RevMob

I use Applovin but right now all the AD networks aren't doing well. The reason is more of the larger companies are using other services to promote thier games and apps. Like facebook, TV, paying youtubers, twitter, etc. You need a ton of downloads to make money.

Well doesn't this give Indies a better opportunity to earn from ad services since larger companies as you say are using other mediums (meaning no more competition in the ad market)?

As for the you need a ton of dls to make money part, hasn't it always been like that since day 1?

No it give worst revenue let me break it down for you

Sega spend $100,000 in ADs to Admob. You make money because your displaying SEGA ADs in your game.

Sega leaves ADmob. Now you don't show Sega ADs which earn alot of money. You show smaller companies ADs that spend less money so you earn less money.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up.

I really like the idea of YouTube videos. I used to run an independent video game store over 15 years ago and always imported Japanese gaming magazines that came with DVDs that showed in-game and behinds-the-scenes footage of new and obscure titles. We showed this to customers who visited the shop. When YouTube and other similar services came around, they unfortunately could not afford to provide the magazines anymore but I remember to always go on YouTube to find and download game footage there. I discovered plenty new games and would eagerly send URL-links to friends and colleagues.

It might seem like a lot of work but marketing is really the only way to accomplish earning a decent income off of apps and helps with the luck factor.

I even had my own YouTube channel back in 2005 but struggled figuring out what truly made something go viral. One footage I thought was great got only 1000 views, while another got 260 000! Now many people make a living off of YouTube. I obviously googled the topic and found a few nice articles that gave a reasonable overview of how you can use YouTube to make money:

    https://www.1and1.com/digitalguide/onli ... n-youtube/

It mostly covers tips and tricks for YouTubers themselves, but since advice #5, that is given by PixelPower, is to create a YouTube video or channel, may of the pointers mentioned will be a good way to become acquinted with how it works? Like how YouTube functions commercially for instance.

Apparently, if a YouTube footage of your game is used as an AD on someone's channel, it has to be seen by the viewer for at least 30 seconds for the YouTuber to make money from it. The guide also suggest to interact and become active with other YouTube channels by leaving comments and sharing your opinion using video responses

Anyway, I thought it was a good and brief insight into the world of commercial YouTube that I wasn't aware of earlier, so hopefully some other users can get learn a little from it too
