Semblante

  • Hello. We at Aduge Studio are about to release the third version of Semblante, which we call anniversary edition (currently on closed beta). Semblante is our Global Game Jam 2010 project, that we developed initially on Game Maker, but later ported to Construct because of some of the advanced features Construct has pretty much out of the box.

The second version (which is already a Construct build) is available for download on our website. But we recommend for everyone at the community to test the closed beta of our third version, which is the latest, freshest version (with a lot of new features, bigger level design and less bugs ):

Feel free to critique, bash, nitpick, suggest improvements, etc. Also, don't forget to visit our blog. Thanks.

Anyway, the art and music are pretty good. The game itself was a little too slow and repetitive for me though. And vague. What does screaming do? What's the motivation for the main character? What benefit does exploring a large space have when there is nothing to see but more platforms? What is the challenge?

Anyway, I kind of got... bored. I'm sorry. I realize it's supposed to be an art-game kind of game with a message and such, but maybe being a tiny little bit less vague about goals would help. And I know I'm probably missing the point to this but I think a game with a message can still be challenging and fun to play.

It looks really nice though, I wish you luck at IGF.

Oh, also it seems that a lot of your text boxes are cutting off the words and putting your periods at the beginnings of new lines and such:

This is happening all over the place for me. Using Win7x64. You might want to consider using the SpriteFont addon.

  • Agree with deadeye, can't think of anything else to add. It looks like you've made a concept and now you'll add game elements. It's pity, because the music with graphics gives it good feel.

  • Yeah, not a very closed beta, more like a hidden beta (as we are not delivering it on our official website).

I'm checking Spritefont since, yeah, the typography only works with a specific font installed on windows right now (Grixel Kryou 9). The next build will probably feature it, among other things.

One thing you guys could help is to gauge the game's performance. It usually runs pretty smooth on a variety of hardwares, but we already found some slowdowns with some weaker GPUs we tested. Let us know if you find out that the game can't run at full speed and at what hardware. Thanks.

    PS: Thanks for the input.

    Runs perfectly smooth on;

    Athlon X2 4400

    2.5gb ram

    Zotac ION 512mb DDR3*

*The ION is an Nvidia card (I only have a pci-e 1.0 slot so my options were quite slim) and is somewhere between a Radeon 9800 and a Geforce 6800 in performance.

Anyway... nice atmosphere, and I like the game mechanic with the lights.

  • Quad 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 8800GT 512MB

    smooth, no problem

    Duo 2GHz, 3GB ram, 9300M 256MB

slower, it's still playable as fps is constant, but it looks slower to me then on the computer above
