Convert multiple Excel files into JSON files and import them into construct3.
  • Hi, my pc crashed and now when i try to open my project this error pops up

("Failed to open project. Check it is a valid Construct 3 single-file (.c3p) project.") Is there a way to fix this?

I think the problem was the hdd, but more then that i don't know, please help me!

    Thank you in advance.

  • .C3P files are basically .ZIP files. If you rename the extension to ".zip" are you able to extract it?

Also. Sounds like it was being stored locally on your machine? Not on a cloud based platform?

EDIT: I turned up a bunch of results here, click the link to see the full search result list, duckduckgo.com . There might be some useful information/resources there.

There's algo been posts about this in this community in the past as well. It's hard to find them with a Forum Search, but Google, and Duck Duck Go are bringing up past threads here.

I've only had this happen a couple of times. And, was able to simply restart my computer, reload Construct, then load the project again. Not sure what caused it in my case...

  • When you see this error, press F12 and check last messages in the console log. They will tell you exactly what the problem is.

    Edit: now it's different

  • Yeah, looks like the archive is damaged. You can try repairing it but the chances that the project will work after that are very slim.

ho frack.. Ill try, thank you guys

  • Not a problem. Yeah, the searches I brought up in Duck Duck Go mentioned checking the Debug Console(F12).

That's a real bummer though... I hope you didn't have too much time in the project. I store everything on my Google Drive, and do my best to make fairly regular backups to my local HDD.

    Good luck!

  • I have encountered the same problem with my own project. I thought it was something wrong with my project causing the problem. However, I ran into the same issue while using a c3p project file which parses JSON file and displays the paths of each KEY and VALUE in the file. It is a simple project with two events. Click button to call Function and parse JSON file.

I filed a bug report, but I believe it maybe a Browser problem when a file is saved and then reopened broken. I went through some of my backups, and it ate each one before I knew it what was happening. Just a guess on my part based on what I experienced. I used two different versions of C3, r192 was the first Failed followed by Crashing when clicking on a Layout to open it. So, I went back to an older r191 file and had the same problem occur again after I saved the project and the next day it happens again.

Chrome seems to work but Edge and Firefox seems to cause the same problem to even the small JSON parsing c3p file.

  • Good to know IKnowMyStory. Thanks for sharing your findings :)

I've only ever used browsers built on chromium, and now purely stick to Google Chrome when using Construct 3. Even more reason for me to not bother with other web browsers XD

I wonder why those browsers in particular would corrupt the c3p which was saved in an older version of Construct. I know you cannot open up c3p files saved in an older version of C3, comparatively to what it was last saved in.

But, I think you can still get around this, by making some alterations to the project's files. Or, maybe that was only Construct 2 *shrug*. I've yet to need to revert a C3 project, so I don't know yet.

  • I have been through this issue several times since I have been using Construct 3.

I often work on two different computers: my PC tower and a macOS laptop.

The issue happens sometimes when I work on a machine, save my changes, wait for these to sync via Dropbox and then open the project file (using Dropbox again) on the other machine.

I found out that this issue happens when I use different versions of Construct from one computer to another. I would expect Construct to put that warn message about this, but sometimes a file got corrupted and so this error "failed to open project. check if it is a valid Construct 3 single-file" appears.

I could solve this issue by switching the Construct 3 version of one computer to the same as in the other one (stable to beta or vice-versa) and could finally open the project back.

I think mostly it is an issue with the Construct 3 version your file has been saved to, and for some reasons your file got corrupted while not saving it properly the last time you worked on it.

If you don't remember the C3 version you used to save your project to, you can still rename the .c3p file to .zip and unzip it. Then you should be able to check the saved version used in the config file of your project. You can even change it here, and open the file in the same Construct 3 version. That's how I also could fix this.
