  • Hi. I'm Plasmmer from this topic: .

About the current Construct 3 licensing model, what do you think? In Construct 2, we can buy a license for lifetime. In Construct 3, owners can pay monthly or yearly. Is you ok about it? Personally, I preffer the Construct 2's licensing model.

    Share your throughts about it.

  • I think bringing this up again already will lead to a locked or deleted thread, this topic has been debated to death over a few times already, just scroll through and find the locked toics you can read some people's opinions there

  • The only thing they really haven't talked about is licensing C3 products sold in the store, or how sales of source files will be handled.

Things like: It's not feasible for a non developer to have a subscription, but the subscription model does open possibilities we did not have with C2, etc.

  • Yeah, these threads always get lock locked sooner or later. The only options you have are to pay the subscription, continue to use the free limited version, or find something else.

No monthly option. It's only yearly.

  • This has been done to death already - see here (239 replies, thread open for 2-3 weeks), here (194 replies, thread open for over 3 months), here (198 replies, thread open for ~2 weeks), here (210 replies, thread still open), here (132 replies, thread still open), here (161 replies, thread still open), here (95 replies, thread still open), and here (220 replies, open for ~1 week). This is nearly 1500 posts of discussion already, not including other threads. In some cases the threads became borderline personally offensive towards Scirra staff or other users, which is usually the main reason a thread is locked. Despite all this some people accuse us of shutting down discussion. Rather than feed that perception I'll leave this thread open as long as I can bear, but as you can see this has really been gone over in every facet in fine deal over and over again.

  • I'm not a fan of subscription models in general myself and argued against it in other threads, but Scirra are too far into things to change from the subscription model to a buy once model at this point, and they have some understandable reasons for wanting a more stable income which should also benefit the users of Construct 3.

The Scirra team have heard all the arguments against subscriptions and have at least given consideration to some of the suggestions to make the subscription model more palatable.

Tom has already stated elsewhere that they are considering and discussing internally the suggestions of monthly subscriptions or pausing subscriptions, but that they might not come into affect until after the first year.

Ashley has also stated elsewhere that they are looking at the possibility of allowing people with lapsed subscriptions to modify and re-export previously exported projects - basically allowing users to maintain their apps without requiring re-subscription.

Now it's a matter of waiting to see how things work out, or if you can't do that then moving on to other software.

On a side note, I also think the Scirra staff have been quite lenient in how long they left the other threads open given some of the harsh comments and personal attacks in them.

  • I understand that it continues to spill a lot of digital ink, personally and despite the reluctance at the start, I no longer have anything against paying a couple of drinks a month to support Ashley, Tom and their team. Just imagine how this could allow the company to run better and improve C3 well beyond all our past and future expectations, including related services (don't hurt me please, I say that, I say nothing).
