How do I make a top down racing game go continually forward

So for my history class I am making a game based on the 1848 Gold Rush. And so, I have a scene where the player is to race back to Mr. Setter because they found gold. It's supposed to be a mini game type thing. So I want the player to continually move forward, I am using the 8 direction motion for this? Anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: This is going from bottom to top, not left to right

don't use the default controls and constantly simulate keyboard right (assuming scrolling from right to left) . you will also need to add keyboard object and run checks for other key presses
