    Although they didn't specify when greenlight would officially halt, submissions would now be $100 USD per game which isn't bad.

  • jobel - that's literally nothing. It's a change because green light wouldn't just allow everything in. Now everything is fair game. If I make a crap game and sell it for $10, I'll easily make my $100 back, so where is the risk?

  • If its a crappy game, your chances of making 100 back are kind of slim.

    If it's a good game your profit will be less.

    Less crappy games on Steam.

    Less lower earning games for Steam to deal with, leaving just the higher earning games to profit from.

    More reason to publish somewhere else.

    I agree with you there. The barrier to entry seems a little low for publishing on Steam. Then again, they are Steam and have access to more data than the US government. I hope they have kept quality in mind when they made the decision.

  • cjbruce - of course not. Green light was the lite version of quality control from how they originally did it. Now they get so many submissions it's easier to just cash in on it and rid of any quality control.

    Huge disappointment for developers, but it's also bad for gamers, too. Everything is going to be catered to what you like, leaving you with no way to find out about things you "might" be interested that you had no idea existed.

    Itch.io, Gamejolt, you can even sell full games here in the Scirra store, of course it's not really marketed that way.

  • Remember that it is a 100$ recoupable fee which means you'll get the money back so there is no risk whatsoever as it is almost impossible to not have sales to cover that on Steam

    So don't worry, this will not change anything and the flood of games will sadly continue to poor in.

  • Anonnymitet - actually it'll be more like trying to make money on the Apple Store. I can see hundreds of titles released every week.

  • ome6a1717 Yeah, I gave up on the mobile market a long time ago with all the thousands of ketchapp game clones released everyday. Just look at the top 100 on the app store. One company, "King" in this case has 24 of their games on the top 100 list and they are all clones of candy crush. That if anything proves how messed up the mobile platform is atm.

    Anyway, I hope Steam and consoles manages to avoid the same fate. But I must admit that I'm really worried about the future of game development.

  • Recoupable could be interpreted in different ways, and it doesn't say what they mean exactly.

    It's kind of a strange way to set things up, especially since I can't imagine anyone not wanting their money back.

    "Steam:

    Heres your money back."

    "Gamedev:

    Nah you keep it since I'm an independant developer, and therefore have loads of cash sitting around."

  • newt interesting. with the way how games are flooding the market making $1000 in sales is going to be a bit tuff :/
