  • Good news! Chrome 13 was released today, and if you go to about:flags and enable "GPU accelerated canvas 2D", Chrome gets a nice solid 60fps on most games. Before, turning on the same option didn't seem to affect the framerate - seems they've done a lot better now.

    You still have to manually enable it, but I think they'll enable by default in a release soon. Then, the big three - IE, Firefox and Chrome - all will have really good, fast, hardware accelerated canvases!

  • In fact, between the big 3, there's an unceasing chase. Sometimes IE is first, sometimes it's chrome, sometimes Firefox. The fact to the matter is that they are emulating one another and all keeping moving forward.

    Safari is improving too, but does it have competition on mac ? There's a sort of monopoly. So, no hurry for them, but they are following the movement too.

    Yeah, the intense competition is great. Safari 5.1 was released soon, and had some canvas performance improvements, but still doesn't reach a solid 60fps on my machine. (I was testing on Windows - I think the Mac browser is faster and better - I don't think many people use Safari on Windows anyway.) Still, I think Firefox and Chrome work on Mac, so there's still plenty of competition for Safari. Opera and Firefox have mobile browsers and Chrome make the Android browser so there's good competition in mobile browsers as well.

    I don't think so - I think "GPU compositing" is just generally using hardware accelerated rendering for ordinary HTML pages, and the "GPU accelerated canvas 2D" is specific to the <canvas> tag's rendering. Are you on Mac? Maybe it's something they've only got in the Windows version so far.

  • yep on a mac...no haterz please, i use all three platforms regularly. i don't see any other flags like the one you describe.

  • I just tried the Chrome 14 dev build - looks like GPU accelerated canvas 2D is enabled by default there.

    Great! Just 2 months or so and it should be out!
