  • Thanks for the honest feedback, everyone! I had completely forgotten about the platformer-based enemy performance limitations. Sure, there are ways around that, but since I'd be going into C2 as a way around doing the more finicky stuff in Unity, that issue and the others mentioned seem to cancel out the relative hassle of using Unity.

I think I'm going to stick with Unity, and just figure out the stuff I need to, and/or grab some assets to make life easier. It's a pity, I was looking forward to using Construct again. I absolutely adore the event system, it makes total sense to me, but it doesn't make sense to use a framework that could hold back any success this game might have.

  • Hi everyone,

Before I start, I must say that Construct 2 is the reason why I'm a game developer today. Without it, I'd never have learnt the principals of game dev that I apply now. With that said, I moved over to Unity for a first-person 3D game that I've spent nearly the last two years on. I'm now thinking about taking on a side-project in the form of a side-scrolling 2D platformer. I looked at the many ways of doing this in Unity, and, being the non-technical developer that I am, thought that Construct 2 is probably a more suitable platform on which to develop.

Bearing in mind I haven't touched C2 since r208 (June 2015), I've got a few questions that I'm hoping the community can answer for me:

    1) How is support these days? Still going well enough? On that note, is C2 stable?

    2) Is there any (speculated or otherwise) ETA on Construct 3?

    3) Are there are must-have premium addons/behaviours/etc. that I should look at for a side-scrolling platfomer?

    4) How is Steam integration on C2?

    5) How's performance looking for standalone(exe) builds? Are we still at the mercy of Chrome's wonky WebGL support?

    6) Anything else you can think of?

Really hoping that you fine folks can give me the answers I'm looking for. I know that the forums were a huge part of my progression as a developer when I was most active with C2; I'm hoping that's still the case! Thanks!

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • A couple of text errors:

    • "RPG Games" in the genre list down the side is redundant. It should read "Role-playing Games"
    • "Tutorial games" needs an upper-case G for Games, for consistency.
  • Oh, thanks for posting this here, as I seldom visit Open Topic!

I've been off Construct 2 for a little while, will definitely have a good think about entering this. Pity that the prize isn't a Pro Edition of C2, but this would be more about personal satisfaction anyway.

  • This should go in the How Do I forum.

There are a few ways to handle these sorts of situations. The way I do it is with an invisible dummy object, let's call it a spawner. I create the spawner(s) wherever I'd like my objects to spawn, and then spawn the spawner there instead. Next is to check if it's overlapping the player/obstacles/walls/etc. If it is, destroy it. Then create a function for the spawner to create your object.

  • I'd say just pick a C3 thread and throw in your ideas there (easier for Scirra to keep an eye on just a few of them). As for C2, the general impression is that startling new features are unlikely, but tweaks and general improvements that are likely to keep going for some time, so I guess it depends on what you're looking for; if it's wishlist stuff then I'd suggest C3.

  • On my pretty beefy desktop PC (Core i7 860, 8GB DDR3, GeForce GTX 770), it only runs okay. At native res (full screen 1920x1080), I get between 40-59 (never 60) fps. It slows down the most while spinning around a lot, but even if I just sit there it constantly shifts between 49-59 fps. It's also noticeably janky - lots of noticeable lag even while spinning around, about every few seconds, even though the fps doesn't show any drop-off.

If I switch to lower resolutions and/or decrease the size of the window, the frame rate improves to something that never drops below 50, but the jankiness persists. Even at super low resolutions it occasionally hits 60 fps but never for very long, tending to stick around the 55 mark.

Basically, it looks like every performance nightmare everyone complains about on these forums come true

  • Yeah, there's nothing wrong there. You're just reading it wrong.

It's saying: If chance is greater than or equal to 1, or less than or equal to 10. Number to the left of "<" are smaller than, to the right are greater than. Conversely, numbers to the left of ">" are greater than, and to the right are smaller than.

  • Edelplastic, there's a link to a capx on the first page of the tutorial.

  • I can't wait to play with this. More than just allowing us to exceed the 50MB limit, it makes it easier to deploy updates: put your "static" assets like music and base sprites into the secondary APK, and only ever update the primary APK (which will contain your event scripts and new/changed assets) as you expand your game or fix bugs and whatnot. Saves users download time/data as well, which is still a concern on mobile for many people.

  • Yeah, I'm not entirely against the idea, but it would need to be a critical mass type of thing: here's a hundred grand, go forth and make something incredible. A steady flow of funds over the next couple of years would definitely keep things going at a decent pace, but we might find ourselves stuck in the same sort of rut that C2's been in lately: not enough manpower to really push things forward enough, but a customer-base that's steadily growing and with it, its demands.

Of course, I know nothing about the inner workings of Scirra; this is all just my uneducated opinion based on a limited perspective
