    I'm just excited to see where this goes, I've got some stuff I might sell, but I think I'll enjoy watching the opening stages of this development even more than a possible financial return!

    $5 is actually $3.50 - a maximum price cap is a bad idea as it completely discourages quality if a developer has no direct competition.

    Let developers adjust the price of their products and let the market dictate the price; to ensure quality Scirra could charge a developer licence of $30 a year to ensure people take it seriously.

  • Noob question: what's the deal with PHP? Is it important to games?

    I'll try and give the Cliff Notes answer for this -

    First off I don't know what ryackov meant when he said not many hosts support PHP, I've never seen a host that doesn't; there's the odd one the wont let you use some PHP functions, but these are just guys in their garage; any decent webhost has PHP.

    As to what PHP is, well there's two types of websites, static and dynamic; static sites are exclusively written in HTML, and dynamic sites use PHP. The most common use of PHP is to either retrieve or submit information to a database server; and the most prevalent example of this e-mail forms.

    As for whether you need it, you will, but I wouldn't bother looking for it, everywhere will offer it.

  • phpBB has some great responsive themes, but the only mobile device I use to browse the forums is an iPad and it already works great on that anyway.

    That's definitely possible, but we'd have to set up some naming conventions (everyone puts a number or initial) in front of their objects to prevent clashes

    Getting serious now, how about this for an idea -

    There's a set dimension for each submission, each submission is independently hosted (or if people want I'll give away FTP details and we'll just chuck it up on some shared hosting)

    There's a "master file" that acts as the actual game, the player loads up the game and starts playing the level, they fail, and when they hit restart a different game loads up, the same thing happens when they pass a level; the game would cycle through a set of levels (say 8) until they're all completed, and then you move onto the next set. Rapidly shifting mechanics give both diversity and help the game feel fresh; with the added benefit of the games being inherently simple, easy for the player to understand, easy for the dev to make.

    Basically - iframes, obviously this can be iffy with some mobile devices, but it removes the need for a SVN or complicated co-ordination; devs make their game, upload it and share the details. Loading would be an issue - can we pre-load URLs yet? If not we could get fancy with some webdev.

    tl;dr: We make a wrapper.

  • I believe there was talk at some point about making a game with characters from other C2 games.

    There certainly was, I can't find it for the life of me - it's not that old, no more than a year.

    In my head the game itself would be a hodge-podge of 2D games, real diversity.

  • It's highly semantic, but I've always considered the games themselves to be engines, and C2 to be a framework.

    C2 is described as an engine almost everywhere though.

    After seeing the new forum footer, the idea has resurfaced.

    These characters have a story to tell, a game to be played - do you guys think we can do it?

    A community wide team-up to demonstrate what C2 can do, a real show piece.
