Nice find (escapist magazine;) however in my opinion the type of caution people will have for 'indie game companies' is different. One would be cautious simply because: are they just asking for money, just because or is there an actual reason?
I mean, when I back things (to date.. about 6 projects?) they're virtually finished or have everything there (so they just need manufacturing and shipment costs)
I mean I've certainly had the urge to BS about a project and plump it up just to get a computer... but then reality struck and before I launched the campaign I realised to actually make the game was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard to do for someone of my skill (and the game is what a backer cares about, not your finance or company.)
Here is a good example of when to start a campaign.
I've backed this guy.
OH and RE: more of a budget to play with...
I'm making a game atm-- royalty free stuff + stuff which I've bought.
I've poured every little pound of moneys which I get into buying new things <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle"> you either want it or not! I'm hoping that later production stage I'll be able to find somebody to share the profit with me and do the art, but maybe I wont... so then I'll just have to wait some more and pay someone else after release.
