  • TIME'S UP!

Judging has officially begun. Results will go up on April 6th!

HUGE THANKS to all participants, supporters, and entrants!!!

  • Only 2 hours remain until all entries are due!

    Good luck, entrants!

(Don't forget, you have to post here for the submission to be final!:

  • JohnnySix, I can't find your entry in the official entry forum.

You have to have a thread for your entry here:

    hbgames.org/forums/viewforum.php

In order to enter the contest.

If it's there and I'm just not looking hard enough, my apologies.

  • Hi again! Only a couple days left 'til judging! Woo!

If you have an entry that's ready to submit, here's where you do it!:

    http://www.hbgames.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=76375

Just wanted to say how happy I am about how the contest is shaping up, and how proud I am of all the entrants. Thank you so much, to everyone who has supported or entered this contest. You're the best <3

  • Rosa is right.

I didn't want people really stressing details, so I said not to stress too much about them. Sometimes people focus so much on rules or restrictions that they don't have fun, or they underestimate themselves and bow out. Or, even worse, they focus so much on rules, that they get into endless arguments about their interpretations of them! :P

You will need to keep your game within the Free edition's limitations -- but it doesn't sound like you'd need to really trim a HUGE amount to still make it work.

There aren't many contests that have so very few rules or conditions ... :)

  • Update! Want to be a Judge?

We have about 10 days left on this contest.

If any members here are interested in being a judge, let me know! I don't want anyone to think we will be playing "favorites" among popular HBG members (we won't! But in case you're worried about it, why not be a judge yourself?).

    The judging rubric is here:

    hbgames.org/forums/viewtopic.php

    REQUIREMENTS TO BE A JUDGE:

To be a judge for the contest, you need to:

1.) Be available to judge all entries between April 1-3.

2.) Have time & patience to give a fair playtest to 10-15 games. You will need to play them either until their conclusive ends, or until a point that bugginess or unfair difficulty has forced you to stop.

3.) Have a fairly decent eye for design, and a good grip on English -- Part of the judging rubric is in speculating on how well an entrant has beautified & honed their entry thread.

4.) Have speakers or headphones -- Part of judging involves assessing sound!

5.) Have a decent internet connection, Chrome (browser), and a PC that isn't from the stone ages (if the game SEEMS to lag just because of problems on your end, it could negatively affect your judging).

6.) Become a registered member on HBGames, so you can share your results with the other judges, and assess whether or not entrants have been making attempts at advertising their game, in their signatures and elsewhere.

7.) Be fair & balanced (and not in the FOX News way, but ACTUALLY fair & balanced)!

8.) ... Not be personally entered into the contest. (Sorry, entrants!)

If you feel like you meet those criteria and want to judge, you can either post here, or PM me, either here, or at HBGames.

I will give you further details if you're interested.

Thank you so much for all your support, everyone!

  • Hey Venetia. Should it only be for games competition one could also make apps with it.

    I'm ... Not 100% sure what you mean ...

If you're asking if you can create an application with it (non-game), it was never really considered. HBGames is a game-making site, so our focus on making games. We've had a few members make non-game apps before, but the contest is about game making.

    My apologies!

Didn't know that app-building would be a big draw ... If enough people want it, we could do an event focused on app-building in the future.

Hey Venetia, does the game need to be entirely finished? Or can it be one or two really polished levels to a longer game?

It can be 1 or 2 really polished levels.

I know that the time constraints, and the constraints of the Free version, will truncate the length of your game. And that's fine.

We're looking for a beginning, a gameplay portion, and a reasonable form of a conclusion or completion. Doesn't matter if your game lasts 3 hours or 3 minutes ...

    We posted the judging rubric:

    hbgames.org/forums/viewtopic.php

You'll see that we're looking for:

    • Stability
    • Fun
    • Innovation
    • Graphics (mostly that it doesn't look really crummy & slapdash)
    • Sound
    • Marketing

    You won't find "Length" in the list. A super-polished 3-level-game will trump a crummy/ugly/boring 1,000-level-game.

(If you take the time to lengthen the game experience though, it may improve how we feel about it in comparison to other games!)

So ... Hope that answered that :)

[quote=]This site was never very friendly with strangers, I myself went through several embarrassing situations, like people more experienced humiliating you in any doubt ... Anyway, good luck to whoever tries, if the users of this community did not slaughter you on the first "Post" ...

I apologize if you've ever had a negative experience.

I should mention that, back in 2007-2008, the site went through a period of management by some rather unfriendly people (won't name names).

The trolls left though, and we've been working really hard to clean up our image with others.

HBG is incredibly laid-back now. The only way you'll get on our "bad side" would be to just act like a really negative member. Doing things like overreacting to constructive criticism ... Posting angry tirades, or trolling/harshing on other members ... Spamming or just generally being a nuisance.

I've never been more fond or proud of our memberbase or staff than I am now ... If you experience trouble from anyone, or you feel you're being slighted in any manner, I beg you to please drop me a PM so I can rectify the situation.

    :)

  • One entry per person, I'm afraid. Didn't really think that'd come up, since making your own game is kind of big task! Haha.

Instead of making multiple games ... Just make your one entry SUPER AWESOME :P

  • I'd rather everyone not be too terribly concerned about restrictions--it seems like you guys are really focusing on them, and that's not the point of the contest.

Like Onzephyr said, I would prefer to try to uphold the honor system here. Obviously all of you with the Standard license will know what will seem like you're giving yourself an unfair advantage.

Remember that the HBG members will be coming into the contest with little/no knowledge of the software.

However, if someone severely goes above and beyond here, and they figure out a way to successfully get a million amazing things happening all at once in the Free version, then kudos to them.

If we suspect that you went way outside the confines of the Free edition, we MAY request your capx. That'll be the exception rather than the rule, though.

We're all laid back at HBG. Don't worry; be happy. (Make games.)

  • Also, I wonder how the guys at HBGames will enforce the rule... :O

We're not going to be so stringent as to ask for your .capx's.

The limitations AFAIK are basically that you are limited to 100 events, and max 4 layers.

So if you give us a game with 6 moving parallaxes and like 6000 dudes running around on the screen, we MAY have to disqualify you (or ding you a lot of points ... Not sure which I'd prefer to do, I guess it depends on how many successful entries we get).

Why do we need to use the free version? we payed for the full features to the engine, this is not really promoting what the engine can do if were limited to the free feature's.

The contest -- though money IS at stake -- is mainly to distribute copies of the engine to people who don't have it.

While people who already OWN the full version of the engine are still welcome to participate, it's giving them an unfair advantage to let them make a game that can be potentially bigger/more impressive because it doesn't have the same restraints that everyone else is working with.

It's like baseball. Sure, Tony McGuire was a demon on steroids. But it's not really a level playing field if one guy is massively juiced up.

    Any other limitations?

You have to be over age 13, or have parental consent if you're under 18.

And it ... Can't be laden with outright pornography. No NSFW!

    Common sense stuff.

HBG is not a very strict forum. Don't worry too much about limits.

And what about contributed plugins? Any restrictions on using those (as in the Scirra Arcade)?

You're free to use whatever resources or plugins that you can find.

You can't like ... Take someone else's game, and modify the colors or something, and re-release it. That wouldn't be very cool of you!

But other than outright plagiarizing something else, please use whatever tools you have at your disposal to make this as fancy as you can within the time limit.

  • I think I'm in. I have a couple questions though <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle">

So we can make any game we want? any? <img src="smileys/smiley3.gif" border="0" align="middle">

Is the game limited to the Scirra arcade? ie are we allowed to use custom plugins?

You can make ANY type of game. A shooter. A platformer. An RPG. A shooting, platforming RPG with robots that shoot lasers out of their nostrils and have spiky anime hair.

Doesn't matter; go crazy with your imagination! :D

It can be any length, so long as it has a title screen, a game portion, and a logical end.

You are free to upload your entry to the Scirra Arcade (and, please do!). But in order to be judged, you must make a topic for your game in the C2 Contest Board at HBGames. It can be a Work In Progress topic, where you fish for feedback, or you can also hold off on making the topic until the end of March. It's up to you. (I recommend the former option, though!)

Jazz up your topic, make it pretty, and advertise your game (signatures, avatars, userbars that you can distribute to other people, whatever you can muster!). Bonus points will be awarded for excellence in advertising/marketing.

I have a question if I enter, and would be lucky enough to win one of the standard licenses could I give it to someone that didn't win anything?

The reason I ask this is because I already own a license.

Yes! If you win a license and already have one, simply tell us who you'd rather give your license to, and we'll give it to them.

If you don't have anyone in mind, let us know, and we can raffle it off or something.

    And thanks for being generous <img src="smileys/smiley27.gif" border="0" align="middle">
