  • Hi there :)

Before I start, I would like to say that my question is not here to get down C2 or something. I just want to understand why and what's wrong with C2 and my computer.

May be some of you know, I work with an home PC and a laptop (poor laptop with an intel gma 3150). I like to make game with my home pc, upload my project and continue it with my laptop when I'm not at home.

But I have a problem : on my laptop I have very very poor performances with C2. Please wait I haven't finished ^^

I thought first of my poor laptop and graphic cards, update drivers etc... but nothing. I found this very strange.

So I made a test, I have taken my pseudo starfield in C2 and I translate it in Game Maker Html 5 to compare and see if the problem persist with Gm Html 5.

    Here's the C2 project with capx : C2 Starfield

Here's the same in Game Maker Html 5 : GM HTML 5 Project

All have the "same code and algorithm". The problem is that on my laptop the C2 version is awfull, slow and unplayable.

But the GM HTML 5 version is fast and smooth on the same laptop !? Both can use WebGL or not (automatic). I

know that my laptop badly support WebGL, but if the problem was webgl it would be the same with the Game Maker HTML 5 version (it can use webgl too if it is available), but it's not the case.

What sort of thing C2 use that could be incompatible or something with my laptop ? I send these projects to a friend who has a laptop (a poor too lol) and he saw the same thing.

Is there something that C2 uses witch could be a problem ?

On my Home PC both work correctly.

    Thank you for help.

PS : please be cool, english is not my first language ^^

  • If we compare with competitors, it's certain that C2 is the only one that support ONLY Html 5 ^^

  • Ashley : I wonder if this is not my laptop graphic card (intel gma 3150) that is not compatible with webgl. I tried to find some information about it and this chipset but I didn't find anything.

For the exe wrapper that could be a good idea to be able to avoid blacklisting.

  • The fact is webgl is not supported by all browsers.

And some chipset do not support webgl too and I am a great example with my laptop. But a native exe that uses directX or OpenGL works perfectly on my same laptop (but my home PC support it).

That's why my example with 250 sprites on the screen is very very slooooow in html 5 and almost perfect in native exe.

It is not (for me) a technologic performances problem.

I didn't say that webGL hasn't features or same features than directx and opengl, I just said that webgl is not the most compatible for now.

Your alpha test (exe wrapper) is unplayable on my laptop too. That's just a question of compatibility.

For now, WebGL is not 100 % compatible with all chips and browsers...

And if I take me again for example, if I want to develop a game wth a lot of effects with C2, I can't on my laptop, at the same as I'm not at home to use my home PC, just because of webgl ^^

I'm conscient that my laptop is not over great mega powerful (mouarf) but it has the capabilities to launch a unity 3D Game, a directX / OpenGL 2D games, an AGK games, a game maker exe games, a monkey games etc.. but C2 games, if the games is a little complicated (for the display) => nada.

Well, it can't launch Call Of Duty game lol (don't want to exagerate either), but "voila".

And I'm sure I'm not the only one that have a laptop that doesn't support webgl, they are dev, or they are gamers.

I don't want to be boring, I give just my opinion. I'm frustrated with C2 on my laptop like a probably gamer could be if he wants to test a game he can't because of compatibility issue with webgl.

In fine, you said "web game for many years" but if we want to make a game and not a "web" game, with C2 we have to use html 5 too with the webgl etc...etc.. that (and this is in my opinion) is not the best thing for now because of things I explained above.

But, be sure I follow future updates and look at C2 with attention. And I wait for the exe wrapper (with Awewsomium) witch is a good idea to permit user share their creation in a exe browserless distribuable format.

  • I am completly agree with 0plus1.

I don't say that html 5 is not the future for the WEB games (yes it is I think html 5 will have more features than flash) but for "games only" I don't think that the native exe will disappear or will be replace by a "simple" embeded html 5 game.

I'm sure of one thing : When Scirra said a sentence like "after the html 5 will be ok, we were be able to see for other export possibilities" at the beginning of C2, I wanted to help them and support so I adopt the earlier licence. (we have to be honest, C2 is a great product)

But if I was be able to see the future, and read before what I read in this topic (to resume exe is not the plan either), I would not have bought the earlier licence and stay with the free version.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Ashley :

Yes I already tried to update ma drivers but no change because I have a "poor" graphic cards on my laptop and this is why that I said that performance is better for somes projects in exe than html 5 because it's fully playable on my poor config, but with html 5 if you can't activate the webgl this is "dead" :)

I did not see your alpha exe wrapper and I'm going to test that.

Edit: I see it but in fact that is the same thing, that stays html 5 embeded in an exe (html 5 without browser) so the performances stay the same "in fine". To make a summary, if you don't have a good PC performances will be poor because of webgl or some things. With my sample I must say that 250 stars on my laptop is too much, in html 5 and exe but if I put 175 stars, same performances in html 5 but better performance in exe with a native directx application :)

But don't believe that I want to be boring with these remarks, that was just my feeling. And I understand that you don't have enought hands to develop all features.

  • In my head, I remember the start of C2 when Scirra said "we want the html 5 exporter to be finished before start other" and today we have a sort of "may be someone will code a wrapper"...Don't know what to think.

But nobody will be able to extract out of my head (we can say that in english ? lol) the idea that "nothing is better than an executable when a game starts growing or for game that asks a lot of effects".

    onstruct 2 exports -> HTML5

Gamemaker Studio (Soon to be released) -> HTML5, EXE, iOS, Android

Stencyl -> Flash, iOS, soon HTML5 and Android

Multimedia Fusion -> EXE, iOS, Flash, Android, Symbian, Xbox360

For GameMaker Studio : they change their delphi runner with a c++ runner more faster for this version.

    CrystalNoir: So did I. ^^

And I continue believing that one day....:)

  • Hi there :)

Sorry for the double post, just to say that I upload the Capx on the Arcade Scirra WebSite. You can download it and use it if you want :)

I try to comment "lines of code" to make you understand it :)

    Have fun !

  • I am going to try to share my point. I prefer apologize for my aproximative english now ^^

I believed on C2 because I thought that we could be able to export our game in .exe in add of html 5 etc...But it seems when I read this topic and Scirra answers that it's not the plan.

Html 5 is great and we have with C2 some good performances but if you take my pseudo 3D Starfield example, in HTML 5, if you don't have a great and fast PC, it runs very very slowly.

This code, I've translated it in a lot of language and "game makers" like AGK, or Game Maker HTML 5 / Studio (bta).

The fact is that in some PC's / laptop (for example) performances are not the same than an executable (offline or online). In exe, this code works on my poor laptop, less faster than my home pc but it's playable. In html5, on my poor laptop it's just unplayable ^^

And I tried in offline mode too (local) it's the same thing in html 5 on my laptop. But in executable, it's playable.

If you want to make a game with a lot of effects...I don't know how C2 will react with those.

But I have to say it, Scirra make a great job with C2 and it works perfectly with html 5 and I love it. But I would like a exe exporter too ^^

  • Hey guys :)

Thank you for your comments :) Please excuse me if I make some "english mistakes" it's not my first language. I will try to do my best.

So, Sully you are right, we can improve it. I will share the capx on the afternoon (France Time lol), and I will update the topic with some explainations.

But you will see that it's not difficult, there is a very simple code. The aim is to create a fake z coordinate with some mathematic calculation :) On the other side, there are always 250 stars (sprites) on the screen so for example on my Eeepc that's not smooth (because I have a small graphic card and no webgl :( ).

Thank you and I'm happy if you enjoy it. I posted my sample in the Scirra Arcade and it was been approved so I updated the link at the top of this topic with the Scirra Arcade link.

Ouf...I hope you will understand all I wrote here lol ^^

  • Hey guys :)

I just finished to translate my Pseudo 3D Starfield code sample in Construct 2. This is a code I made on other language and software, and I wanted to translate it for Construct 2 :)

You can see the result here : Pseudo 3D Starfield

I will share the capx soon :) This just a sample, and I will give you the Construct 2 file, so you will be able to play with if you want to :)

    Thanks :)

Updated : you can now download the capx on the Arcade Scirra WebSite :)or here : Download the capx

  • Very cool :) Thank's !

That would be cool to be able to retrieve purshase link on our website account that's true ;)
