I thought that rather than a normal football - which wouldn't really be able to destroy the boxes etc, should maybe look like a metal ball. Then it would be able to survive and catapult off the saw.

I actually thought the saw accelerated the ball the first time I tried it (maybe an idea?). Instead it just restarts the layout, which is OK, but not as impressive

You can use a program like Teleport: one of many so-called 'offline browsers' - basically webspiders that download the whole site. Regarding it being a forum, Google bots are usually allowed to crawl sites - google for hints!
I can't remember where it is, but Rojohound used python to read in xml as part of a tile map reader. You should be able to find it with a quick search.
