There's lots of ways and plugins to do this. You could use the built in system save/load, use an ini file, an array, etc.

I think as a side point something a lot of games do which is fun is give idle enemies/players special animations. Worms has several and they make me chuckle, all part of the game design.

It's just some of us making a game in 45 mins because we're bored? Why's it bad?

A graphics library - to have a global external bank you can drop in - is a concept that's fairly hard for 1.0, but it's something we're looking to make easier in 2.0.
