To add layout variables right now would be to add another layer of arbitrary variables; in 2.0, there will be just 1 place to set up variables, and there it can be decided if a variable is of global or layout scope.

It's disabled after a time; we've had problems before where people go back and just completely sabotage or change their post unrecognisably.

Several people have had similar issues before and reported that updating their graphics card drivers solved it, so you should try that first.

The CPU work will be nothing whichever way you use, generally, so I wouldn't worry about it.
