So 'open' in the picture editor for one frame loads alpha correctly - but the import images dialog doesn't? Is that how its working? It sounds like a bug, it should read the alpha properly all the time.

Base 64 is not encryption. It's a number base, like binary. However, we do need an encryption plugin.

Hmm, looks like a bug... I guess you could work around it for now by using sprites - post it on the tracker and I'll get round to it soon.
