That bug's been fixed for the next build.
The grid suggestions are decent and you should put them on the feature tracker; they'll definitely make it into 2.0.
When it crashes, does it crash in your plugin? Use debug to find out. If it doesn't, then you should submit it as a bug.

Ah it was fixed for the next build so I didn't notice it.
Don't forget to run the other installer that opens, for the redistributables.
Others have reported it working fine on Windows 7 after that.
It should probably be renamed 'copy from sprite/canvas', but it's very handy as it is .
Reading pixels directly from a Direct-X texture is far slower than the method I suggested, using the 'copy from sprite' action of Image Manipulator, and then using the Get R/G/B expressions of it.
