Not to dismiss the utility that such functionality provides, but is there really a huge market out there who use gamepads? XBox 360 controllers maybe, but I've never heard of it being common place for a game to use any other controller..?

PS 0.0 can only be used for renderstates; parameterised effects will always require some form of processing, and thus cannot be achieved in the same way.
