  • Perhaps focus on a few core mechanics that are simple enough to implement, but are generally just fun for a player to perform.

Think of your choices of mechanics as a deck of cards. It is up to you to make a game with those cards (mechanics) that motivates the player to win and have a fun time trying. The same 52 cards gets you Go Fish as well as Texas Hold'em. The same mechanics of running left and jumping get you Mario as well as Sonic and if you just add shooting you get Megaman as well as Contra.

I hope that helps you visualize and breakdown one way to think through the process of making a simple game.

  • I just finished listening to the podcast and can't wait to hear more. This has actually helped me know a little bit more of what to expect from this software and I know now to avoid mobile development until I have the fundamentals down. Thank you putting forth the effort to make the Construct 2 experience that much more amazing.

  • This is hilarious! The writer must have had quite a kick writing this. My favorite:

"DO let me have as many save slots as I want. Because you’re on PC! You’re free! The most a save is likely to take up is about 10MB. My hard drive is, like, lots more megabytes than that! Millions of them! There is no reason in the whole wide universe why you need to restrict me to eight. I might want to keep my earlier saves without having to hand copy them from which ever stupid folder you’ve secreted them into that you won’t tell me anyway. Is it because you hate gamers? You work so hard, for so many months, and by the time your game is done you just feel nothing but contempt for your potential customers? “How many saves shall we allow in the PC version? We’ve got room for infinity of them.” “THREE. And store them in the Recycle Bin.”"

I think this is why we must continue playing games even when we are developing: To remember the nuances of what annoys us that games sometimes do.

  • Wow. I love seeing truly independent game development look and feel so nice. Thank you very much for sharing this with us. It is quite inspirational.

  • Very nice simple advice that I think will be helpful to me. Thank you. What vector software would you recommend for a beginner?

  • Hello my new community!

You may call me Izzy if you'd like. I'm as excited as ever to involve myself in this community to learn more about game design and to learn more about the people making them. I am new to the practice of game design, but I have studied this subject and correlating subjects in a broad scope. I'm kind of a research junkie, so I may have helpful links on various things that I'm happy to share as needed. I'm sure you will all be very helpful and I hope to be as helpful to you.
