  • The left/right thing was actually made that way on purpose in response to problems with the built in behaviors, specifically in platforming where holding down both left and right at the same time produced odd looking results.

Changing it back would be back-tracking. Though I guess, as you suggested, having the option to pick which way you want it to behave would be the best idea.

As for professional fighting games and such... those are usually played with arcade sticks or, at the very least, gamepads, so you can't ever press both left and right at the same time anyway. There is no "right way" to do keyboard controls really, as there's no standard for it, and everyone is going to play differently. Playing on the keyboard allows for really sloppy keypresses that you wouldn't ever have to bother worrying about on sticks or pads. And special circumstances usually call for special attention, which means it's not something that only a few people would actually use, therefore it doesn't need to be put in as a general feature, yadda yadda. But every time I make that argument one of the devs comes along and says "sounds good, we'll put it in!" so what do I know?

  • Okay, got everything sorted out as far as a no-sound version goes.

    Download: Right click/save as

Let me know if this works for you, scytos. And don't forget to comment in my compo thread

And I hope you can get Construct running, it really is a good program.

  • Yes, dammit! Play my game or I will shove a didgeridoo up your aborigine *** and make you play the Star Spangled Banner.

Ew, on second thought... no I won't.

Actually, I just made a small sample myself that plays a XAudio2 object and it crashed. So there's the problem. Thanks. I guess you don't need to make me that version anymore.

Now, how do I fix it?

Actually I think making a no-sound version would probably be a good idea so that folks who can't get it running even with the updates and stuff can play it.

Unfortunately, I have some sound-triggered events (is sound playing/is sound not playing) in the opening cutscene so it's messing up the order of the dialogue and stuff

  • Hey, welcome

I hope these guys can help you out. I wouldn't have the first clue as to what's going on.

Also, I didn't even know there were three Construct entries until you mentioned it. I haven't been able to keep up with the compo because I was so busy working on my own project. I'm getting there though, I've had a chance to play about ten games.

Deadeye, can you send him a version of the game with the XAudio2 object deleted from all layouts and see if that works?

Yeah, I can do that. Gimme a few minutes here, I'm still getting my computer in order after the hard-drive crash so I have to reinstall Construct.

  • No, that's the Construct runtime wrapper message for when something crashes, so you don't get the 'please report this message to Microsoft' message. It could be anything... they definitely have up to date DirectX installs? Did you build it with the latest version of Construct? Does it crash on just Vista/XP/any other specifics?

Yeah, I built with the latest version. He's using XP, and yeah he ran the DirectX update. He also say he can run the Construct tech demos, so I don't know what's up. So far this is the only person reporting this error.

  • Anybody have any idea what this one means?

"An unexpected error occurred and the application was terminated. We apologise for the inconvenience. Please report this bug to the application vendor."

I'm thinking he doesn't have the right hardware, maybe?

  • Thanks for the support, guys

No results yet, as voting hasn't started. It'll probably start in a week or so.

Ask them to install the latest DirectX end user runtime.

Thanks Ash, I'll let them know. Hopefully that'll take care of it. I've gotten a roughly equal number of "this game is great" and "this game crashes on me" responses so I was getting a little worried.

And I know that everyone should have their DirectX updated anyway, I just hope the hassle of having to do that doesn't affect my votes

On an unrelated note, my hard drive crashed last night. My internet cut out, so I did the usual "reset router/reset computer" thing, and whaddaya know, my computer wouldn't reboot. It just popped up with "Disk read error." I was pretty worried there for a while, but then I swapped my master and slave drives and installed windows on the new master, and the old drive is still readable (it just won't boot). I thought I'd lost all my work, but thankfully it's still there. Crisis averted.

Now if only I can get it connected to the internet . Ugh, I hate having to reconfigure my damned network.

  • Hey Ashley, there's a lot of people in my compo thread reporting that the game has no sound and crashes for them during sound-related events. I've asked them to post their OS and specs and stuff. Anything I can tell them that might help in the mean-time?

  • Hey thanks, Ash

And yeah, you could put it on the front page if you like. Not this version, though. I guess getting front-page exposure is enough motivation to complete the game the way I intended it to be. If it's going to be a flagship game then I wouldn't want the ending just to be a goofy joke like it is now.

But I am going to take a little break from it for a while. I'll let you know when I plan on picking it up again.

Oh, I almost forgot... The Lake also got a mention on Rock, Paper, Shotgun and indiegames.com, so there's more Construct exposure there too

  • It wasn't Cthulhu, it was just a random creature

And I might make the full version the way I'd originally planned, if there's enough interest. I'm not going to work on it for a while though. I'm taking a break, dammit. I'm tired.

Anyway, I don't really have any hopes of winning the compo. I might end up doing okay, but now that I have time to play the other entries I see there are some really awesome ones. Everyone should play Verge. It's sweet as hell. It runs a little slow for me (like all GM games) but it's still the best compo entry I've played so far. Actually, it's one of the most fun games in general that I've played in a while.

Also, everyone should check out agj's The Lake. It's made in Construct . It's a pretty sweet little game, really short but it's kinda creepy and the ending is good.

  • It's done! I made it just in time! With only ten minutes left on the clock

It's not as complete as I wanted, but here it is: Right click/save as.

(Edit: removed crapfire link, whff came back up)

Anyway, like I said it's not exactly the final product I had in mind. I had to cut a lot of corners and leave out some content in order to make the deadline. And the ending is completely different than the one I originally planned (which should be apparent when you see it... the original one I had in mind was actually serious and resolved the story ).

I didn't have time to make any music for the main level or the ending either, so it's kinda quiet. There are sound effects though. Well, not in the end, but during the main level.

Oh crap, I just realized I forgot to put in the "getting hit" sound effect. Ugh. Oh well, nobody's perfect. I had a lot on my mind up until the last minute trying to track down a collision bug in my code where if one of the enemies was showing it's dying animation then sometimes bullet hits wouldn't register on another enemy. I think I finally got it figured out at the last second (almost literally ).

Anyway, this is not only the first game I've ever finished with Construct, it's the first game I've finished ever. So hooray ).

Also, I won't be posting the .cap for this like I did with LHiT... since I was so rushed it's really messy and nobody would learn anything from it but bad coding habits. I will answer any questions on how I did stuff though, if anyone has any. There aren't really any fancy tricks in the game, though.

  • I haven't had a thanksgiving dinner in a loooooooooooong time. I miss all the awesome food...

    Turkey

    Leg of Ham

    Cranberries

    Cornbread

    Sweet Potato

    Pumpkin Pie

    Buttermilk Biscuits

    Green Bean Casserole

    Fruit Salad

    Corn on the Cob

I had a huge helping of turkey and gravy, potatoes and gravy, stuffing and gravy, biscuits and gravy, and some pumpkin pie and apple pie with gravy. No wait, the pie had whipped cream on it (with gravy [hold the gravy]).

My girlfriend's family is actually pretty lazy about Thanksgiving, they don't really cook a whole lot of different stuff. They make this dish that's like some kind of whacked family recipe with green beans, bacon, ketchup, and onions that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It smells like death and they serve it at every big family dinner. I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually qualify as food.

They didn't even have any cranberry sauce

Oh well, at least I got out of having to play Pictionary. And for that, I am thankful.

  • No Turkey for me, never quite understood where it came from or how religious it's meant to be. Still, to whoever's celebrating it, happy thanksgiving

It's not really a religious holiday. Well, I don't think it is to most people. As for where it came from, some chick by the name of Sarah Hale decided way back when it would be super nice to have a national holiday where family members were forced to interact with each other so she wrote a bunch of US presidents and said "pretty please make Thanksgiving a national holiday." Before that it was pretty much just celebrated in New England as a harvest festival.

  • Thanks guys

I'm in the home stretch now. Today and Friday are the last full days of work I'll be able to put into this. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving so I have to spend half the day with my girlfriend's family (gag). Another wasted night playing Pictionary. Again.

Oh well, at least the food will be good

On the development front I have all the artwork done except one small sprite animation (which I'm about to do right now), and the engine is 100% complete. I've started on the final two cutscenes, mainly getting all the assets in place and ready to sequence the action. I still have to lay out the actual level design, and do some sound effects. Whee...
