  • I see the description says to test the local co-op you need two controllers. Does that mean the template will work the same? Needing to two controllers plugged in to play 2 player local coop with a keyboard + controller isn't going to be a great setup for games..

What do you mean? You need 2 peripherals to control 2 players. You can use the keyboard or controller 1 for 1st player only. If you link a 2nd controller, it recognizes this and puts it into 2 player mode. More controllers added = more players. But controller 2 only works for player 2, controller 3 for player 3 and controller 4 for player 4. I don't think anyone wants to play a co-op game on a single keyboard, is that what you're saying?

I guess I could make a button that toggles for player 1 to either use the first controller or the keyboard. Wondering how I implement that since everything is tied exactly to the Controller's ID. I'd have to find a way to let player 2 to be controlled by controller 1 or 2. Player 3 would work with either 3 or 4, etc. hmmmm.... is this something you guys want?

  • Just a quick confirmation, the Store link is now working!

    phew! Thanks for the confirmation!!

  • Local Co-op with Gamepad Support — Now for sale in the Scirra Store!

<p>NOTE*** To test the local co-op you will need at least 2, or up to 4 Gamepads. It will recognize how many controllers are available at the character selection and adjust automatically. </p><p>Also, due to browser restrictions, you must hit a button on the controllers for them to be recognized. The first gamepad will still also be by the Keyboard, so you need at least 2 gamepads to test multiple players.</p><p>This template is barebones 4 player local co-op with GamePad and Keyboard support. First player is controlled by keyboard AND/OR The first Gamepad. It is quoted to help you understand it. </p><p>There is a character selection screen with 6 characters to choose from (more can be easily added). It's built to easily implement new characters and their Run, Idle, Jump and Fall Animations. These are also easy to implement. The code is built to be copy and pasted should you make any changes to the player mechanics.</p><p>DEMO - dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/104143348/COOP%20Template/index.html%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo far I have:</p>

    • Platform Behaviors for 4 players (all platform mechanics are coded to the family)
    • Character Select screen - 4 players have 6 characters to choose from
    • Dynamic Gamepad addition - If a player boots up a connected controller, the character select screen automatically recognizes this and knows to allow multiple characters to select before going to the first level.
    • Can be easily modified to allow 5++ players (everything is controlled via Family Bahaviors and variables, so adding additional players is easy).

  • im thinking it could be because I didn't add all of the required images. I'll probably have to wait a day until they're approved

  • Link not working / not showing at the Store.

hmmm both links work for me, thats no good. No idea what to do about that, thanks for the headsup though.

  • oh too bad...

any plans to upgrade it to full multiplayer? ...i would defenetly buy it.

I think there's already some templates for that. This was just meant for local co-op since there didn't seem to be any templates for that

  • You mean like all on same screen/PC? ...not everyone on his own PC?

yup! I just changed the title to "local co-op", sorry for the confusion!

  • hm... demo says singleplayer?

you need to add more controllers for it to be multiplayer

  • I'm creating a template for 4 player co-op with gamepad support to sell on the Scirra Store. I am actually surprised to see no projects relating to local co-op. What are things you'd be interested in seeing as part of this template? Currently it's built with platformers in mind. I could easily do separate ones with different control styles, or package them all in one.

    DEMO - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/104 ... index.html

    Store - https://www.scirra.com/store/royalty-fr ... pport-1508

    So far I have:

-Character Select screen - 4 players have 6 characters to choose from

-Dynamic Gamepad addition - If a player boots up a connected controller, the character select screen automatically recognizes this and knows to allow multiple characters to select before going to the first level.

-Can be easily modified to allow 5++ players (everything is controlled via Family Bahaviors and variables, so adding additional players is easy).

Or is this something that no one will have interest in?

I created a template for 4 player co-op platformer with gamepad support to sell on the Scirra Store. What are things you'd be interested in seeing as part of this template?

    So far I have:

-Can use 1 keyboard and 1 controller for local co-op. You just have to toggle the first player's Keyboard or Controller button at the character select menu.

-Platform Behaviors for 4 players (all platform mechanics are coded to the family)

-Character Select screen - 4 players have 6 characters to choose from

-Dynamic Gamepad addition - If a player boots up a connected controller, the character select screen automatically recognizes this and knows to allow multiple characters to select before going to the first level. Same thing if they disconnect.

-Can be easily modified to allow 5++ players (everything is controlled via Family Bahaviors and variables, so adding additional players is easy).

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • Here are few other features I have thought of that I would put to use at least.

    - split screen and shared screen options

    - dynamic splitting screen like the newer lego games have - would LOVE to have this

    - multiple inventory screens - it is really annoying in games for each player to have to open inventory/shop screens separately and really slows down the game play

-color swapped characters/skins - lets players select their character and then skin/color

If I think of anything else I will come back and post them.

All great ideas! But Im going doing this as barebones as possible haha so some players might not use health in the same way I would, or need an inventory, and I just want to get this base function out there.

    Here's the Demo link:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/104 ... index.html

Can you do multiple cameras?! I would have no idea how to split up the screen.

  • I would definitely be interested in that template. I have wanted to add local co-op to my games but it hasn't been a priority for me so having most of the work done would be very helpful. Not sure what other features would be nice to have but sounds like you covered the core features that are needed.

I'm guessing most would want co-op for platformers right? I feel like thats more popular than 8 directional control, although I could do both

  • Sounds great to me. I haven't written one myself yet, and have several game concepts in my idea list.

In fact, I have a few Hot Seat turn based games, (I call them Pass the tablet games,) made already. I do like local player games.

So is yours all on one screen? (device)

I guess I should mention it's with platformers in mind, so yes it's all on one screen. I could easily do any topdown game as well. Maybe I should do them both separately?
