  you don't need to pay for phonegap. just download the archive and compile locally. this is what i intend to do personally and target only ios8

  even if you untick the spalsh screen option in XDK, sample splash screen files will still be included in the apk which makes no sense

  splash screens and icons is a MESS in the latest XDK. the generated apk is filled with default splash screens that you have no way to change before you generate the apk

  the produces a lot of extra files and bigger filesize

  for now it seems they don't have any intention of streamlining that

  there are many graphical sdks these days to speed up dev time and learning something like c++ will look good on your CV

  early last year i made an html5 productivity app and i wrapped it with phonegap for ios

  all i had to do was download the phonegap zip, run a script file on mac, and compile using xcode

  i did not have to download megabytes of files, install thousands of sdks etc

  the final app was 1.5mb in size!

  i don't know if things changed from 2013 to now. i see that now phonegap is a product of adobe. is cordova the same thing?
