Recruiting coders for help with Construct...

  • Hey Ashley... I've been meaning to ask, are you currently the only person working on Construct? Also, how easy would it be for a coder to come into the project "cold," so to speak?

The reason I ask is I've thought about posting a request for help on the "Serious Hardware/Software Crap" forum over at Something Awful. There's a lot of talented coders lurking around there who might be willing to pitch in on the project. It's the best place I know of offhand where a request for help might get a decent amount of consideration. The SA community has it's detractors (mainly because of GBS), but it is a large and busy place.

On the other hand, SA goons can be pretty lazy so there aren't really any guarantees. Still, it might be worth a shot.

  • It's definitely a good idea. I was also going to hunt on Gamedev.net for some extra coders and might have some contributors who can work over the Christmas period. I've not been that proactive yet though because I was hoping to get more documentation and bug fixes to make the project more attractive to other devs, but I guess that's going to take too long, so why not get started now? Try a post or two and see if you can get anyone along <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" />

I'm still working alone at the moment, which isn't ideal for anyone. I won't beat around the bush, it would be difficult for another dev to come on board and get to grips with a large and complex codebase, but given time it's not a big deal, it happens all the time. But if someone were interested in the project, it's no problem for them to be coding away a week or so later.

  • I would also recommend posting about Construct on Games, open source game development software would generate a lot of interest. Might want to wait until 0.87 or 0.88 thou.

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

  • Yeah, I think I'd wait until Construct gets a little closer to v1.0 for a Games thread. That's why I figured SH/SC, to get people who are more interested in the coding side. I'll write up a post and see what happens.

Also, I was browsing through Jeff Tunnell's blog today and I found a link to the Great Games Experiment. It's kind of like MySpace, only for game developers, and without the glitter graphics.

    My profile:

You should check it out, Ashley. It might be a good way to network with people interested in helping out. And we could start a Construct group.

    Plus I need friends in my list <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad">

  • Heh, I signed me up an account (nobody else called Ashley on there!):

If the site is popular then I guess it'd be useful.

  • Friend request sent <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" />

  • Well, here's the thread:

    http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2702477

I decided to post it in Games after all. I guess we'll see where it goes <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" />

    Edit:

Bah, it slipped off the front page with no replies. Oh well, I can always try again when Construct is closer to 1.0

  • I've not been that proactive yet though because I was hoping to get more documentation and bug fixes to make the project more attractive to other devs, but I guess that's going to take too long

Writing a good documentation it's definitly a huge work, I keep suggesting you to put everything on a Wiki and encouraging the community to cooperate on it.

I'm sure the community will respond well and you will be more free to focus more on the program itself.

  • Ah yes, the Wiki. I've set up one here:

    http://www.scirra.com/wiki/HomePage

I'll add a link on the Learn forum to it as well, and we can try and organise some collaborative docs.

  • Well, the SA thread has been getting some attention after all. Not a whole lot, and none from programmers, but at least it didn't die a horrible, lonely death.
