  • Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a program that would let me export drawings as isometric tiles? I have a program that is great for making isometric drawings as it has a great isometric grid, but it can only exports as regular 2d square tiles. I will be using these tiles in the "Tiled" map program.

    Thanks,

    Jaysin

If you're asking what I think you are, then my answer is...

You simply make the isometric tiles in your application of choice like:

    Paint.net

    GIMP

    Photoshop

    and so on...

If you take ordinary tiles and try to rotate/skew them for an isometric view you will lose quality and detail, the images will distort, I don't know of an application that can take such tiles and create them as isometric but I think I recall seeing something that did that a long time ago, however I cannot say for sure and my advice would be to simply create the tiles yourself in the isometric view and you will achieve the best look.

Tiled is a great tile editor!

  • I've been using "Pro Motion" which is really easy to use ,for example I can draw an entire castle and choose to export a tile map of the drawing, it will break my drawing up into multiple tiles according to the tile size I choose and make a tile map file. But it only does square tiles, not 4 sided "diamond" shape isometric tiles.

Do any of the above noted programs do this?

  • Hexels ?

Technically yes they can, but YOU have to chop it all up into the pieces yourself and export, they don't have any option that will take your drawing and do that for you, at least as far as I know...

By diamond isometric tiles do you mean what WhiteClaw posted? (Hexels - Hexagon shaped isometric tiles)

  • Ill look into those programs, I already have GIMP but never used it much.

And no I don't mean Hexels, I mean like these

  • I have a tutorial half typed up on how to create these kind of tiles... I will finish it and post it tomorrow sometime but I use Tiled with those type of tiles all the time...

If you want to create those kinds of tiles don't worry about trying to convert the square tiles into those, set your tile grid to something like this: 64x32 (WxH) keep the dimensions to the power of two and draw in your square (diamond)... Something like this: https://copy.com/opacpd2cehya Download this and load it into Tiled and you will see that it Tiles perfectly under the isometric map.

If you want a higher quality image and you want to increase the resolution/dimensions just remember what I said above...

Use that as your starting point if you wish, I will be creating a full tutorial on it tomorrow well I will be finishing and publishing it anyway lol.

    I hope that helps?

    Kind Regards

    Patrick

  • If you use Paint.Net there is a Grid plugin on their forum...

Install that and set the grid size to the dimensions above in your document and it will set your document up, ready for you to create all of the isometric tiles that you need. Once you have finished creating your tiles just save the image out and load into Tiled and it should work fine.

Hopefully you understand but if not My tutorial will explain it in much more detail =] and you should be able to follow along and understand perfectly fine after going over it.

    Is this what you meant?

  • Great, I'll try this out when I get home tonight.

Looking forward to reading your tutorial.

    Thanks

  • Patriick

    hi

    interested with this tutorial too..

  • Hi Patriick

Did you get a chance to finish the tutorial?

  • Hi Patriick

Did you get a chance to finish the tutorial?

I've finished up the first part yes, sorry for the delay some things came up (yet again) and I wasn't able to work on it as much as I had hoped, I think I will post the first part as I work on the rest sometime in the next 24 hours, It's going to be a very long set of tutorials creating a complete set of tiles and sprites from start to finish, at least that is what I have planned so far! (hopefully it won't become too long winded though)

  • Jaysin86 - I've made a lot of progress on the tutorial over the past few hours but I won't be publishing it just yet. I've covered a lot already and I know that you will like it, based on the tile sheets that you've already sent as an example in one of your previous posts, so just be a little more patient and I should have it done soon.

I will post here to let you know when I've published it, I probably could get it finished up today but I need to go and get some other stuff done =\</p>

  • Jaysin86 - I will be publishing the first part of the tutorial series today where we create the building blocks or template tiles for the isometric map pieces, the second part will contain detailing them and making the pieces look less cube like =]

  • Looking forward to your tutorial. Sounds like you have a lot planned for it and will be putting a lot of hard work into it!
