I'm prototyping different control schemes in the top-down space genre and I'm curious which is your favorite? Or did I miss one?

WASD Movement/ Mouse Orientation

WASD - 8 Direction Movement

Ship rotates towards mouse

W - Accelerate Forward

S - Decelerate

A - Rotate Counter-clockwise

D - Rotate Clockwise

The first one is very good ! It make sense but it's actually not usable that well with a gamepad.

The last one is very good too but don't allow for aiming and moving smoothly at the same time

The two others are not very good : the controls are not responsive and intuitive.

I'm leaning towards pathfinder with ARPG mechanics. Seems that would work for both touch and mouse. Also looking at Van Helsing for how they implemented controller support.
