How to change 8-direction player controls?

I want to change the 8-direction player controls to WASD. How would I do this?

But my game isn't a platformer, it's a top down shooter.

Try out the tutorial first. It shows you how to do animations! It shouldn't be too hard to then apply that to your problem. If you still have questions at that point then feel free to ask more detailed questions.

I think I've got it, except when I walk backwards my character doesn't animate and just stays still.

Oh, and when my character goes into animation, he increases in size.
