sprite design?

what are some good programs for designing sprite characters??

I've been trying out inkscape, but would like to know of other possible options.

I use piskelapp, an online free pixel image editor. Or you could try gimp, also free to download. Gimp doesn't easily enable you to make animations though, but it has great tools.
