How do I decrease length of text object?

i want to decrease length of text object by any no or want to set by any no.

how to do that?

i tried but not getting result. may be i am doing mistake

Your idea is on the right track.

The issue is that you set the text to become a number, instead of using an expression like "left()" (also possible "mid()" or "right()") to actually manipulate the current content of the text.
