  • Construct 2 R84 completely corrupted my whole project, including ALL assets (sounds, textures, animations etc.). All files became unreadable (xml files were corrupted to files full of NULL characters and so did the assets). This happened when I tried to open a project I had saved about 3 weeks back, because I was away from the office. When I left, I also copied the whole project to take with me on my laptop, and to my surprise everything was corrupted on the laptop as well!

This could mean either that I copied the already corrupted project or they became corrupted due to some other reason at the same time (even though they were 2 different PCs).

This is REALLY bad and I have lost faith on Construct 2 right now :( I have bought the license and am considering it for an upcoming project of mine but now I am having second thoughts.

I managed to salvage the project in the end, but ONLY because I had a copy of it on Dropbox by chance, and Dropbox saves old version of files for the past 30 days.

I could put the project file (or any other file) for you to see, but it was just a file filled with NULL characters, so there is not much to see there.

I've seen others having problem with corrupt project files, so this is very serious. Please make this a priority!

  • I'm sorry you've had trouble with your project! However, how do you know it's Construct 2 and not your computer hard disk failing? If there is a problem in Construct 2 obviously we urgently want to fix it as quickly as possible, but how do we tell that apart from your computer corrupting the data itself in this case? So far you're the only one to report this "file filled with NULL" case, so I don't know if it's a Construct 2 problem or not...

I strongly urge you to use Construct 2's built-in backup options. You would have lost at most one day's work if you had a daily backup to your existing Dropbox folder. Even if Construct 2 is absolutely perfect and never fails in any way, your computer's hardware, operating system or other software might, causing a problem with your project. So even if we made Construct 2 invulnerable to any problem at all, it's still highly recommended to set up a solid backup scheme!

  • Try Construct 3

  • The thing that hints that this is a Construct 2 problem, is that every file in the program folder, and only those, were replaced by unreadable files. No other file on the HD was affected.

I, of course, also hope it's not a problem with the program, since I wouldn't like this happening to anyone (or myself) in the future:) I've seen others complaining about corrupted files in the past, but I think it was a bug in a previous version that you've already fixed.

I am keeping all sorts of backups now:)

    Thanx!

  • I had the same thing happen 10 minutes ago. While working on a project I double clicked on an Sprite with the Pinned behavior. The program became unresponsive. I tried to end the process and the Task Manager became unresponsive as well. I had to restart the computer. Well it turns out that Construct2.exe became corrupted as well as my current project and what appears to be some of the assets in the folder with it.

The computer I am using is relatively new (Laptop, AMD Phenom II X4 N970 with 4GB DDR3 Ram, 64-bit Win7) (32-bit edition of Construct2), so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I do have to note that, I am running Construct 2 off of a flash drive and also have my project and assets on it as well. It is possible that the corruption occurred from shutting off the machine, although the drive wasn't saving at the time.

Dead/failing sectors on the hardrive could be the cause to files becoming corrupted.

Also what is the OS on your computer ?

Nevertheless the fact that it happened on two different PCs is strange. I'd be tempted to think, as you noted, that the files were copied after being corrupted.

Did you have to restart your computer like shomaster during some file access (in shomaster's case, I'd think the harddrive was being accessed since he tried to edit the textures of a sprite) ?

I've seen others complaining about corrupted files in the past, but I think it was a bug in a previous version that you've already fixed.

Indeed. The previous fils corruption were fixed quite a while ago, and I don't think they touched the whole files of the folder anyway, in your case it sounds like a different problem.

I am keeping all sorts of backups now:)

About shomaster's case, the fact that windows itself hanged is quite concerning, but I wouldn't necessary put the blame on C2 for it.

I don't know if it really makes a difference, but perhaps using the 64bits version of C2 in a 64bits win7 would make for more stability.

Are your various drivers up to date ? Are you experiencing freezes/need to restart with others programs ? with the windows explorer ?
