what program to make sprites?

Hi, I was wondering what program most people use to make sprites. Not anything like GraphicGale, because I want my sprites to not be pixels. I also was wondering, what size the layout should be, on said program. 16 x 16, 32 x 32, 64 x 64 etc... Should I make the layout bigger than I need and just resize my player so he is smaller? Thanks!

Any graphical program that can export transparent files (png).

As for size, that's hard to say. Depending on the style/project it's generally better to make the art larger, then resize it to 16x16, 64x64 or whatever you need the final sprite to be.

If they are pixel art, just use "nearest neighbor"when resizing to keep them crispy pixels.

Agree with — Gimp is pretty amazing for being free.

For true pixel art, I find Graphics Gale to be my favorite program. It's free and its built-in animation editor is pretty user friendly.
