iTunes is not just for music.
You can sync your iOS Device's pictures and apps in it too.
You can click on the sync-ed device name in iTunes and choose which app you want to drag files into it.
why not on drag end, pick nearest object (the grid square) and move to the object?

If the drag and drop behavior is working slowly, have you considered making your own drag and drop set of events?
Maybe you can detect the touched object and move to the position of the touch at every tick with touch.x and touch.y
