  • Hi all, I'm trying to figure out how to move a sprite to a new position. So, for example, when a condition is met I want a sprite to move to self.x-50, and I want that movement to happen over the span of .5 seconds.

    In my searching I've come across LERP, but I'm extremely confused about how to use it. Every tutorial and forum explanation comes with someone sharing a .capx to explain it, but obviously all the links are dead.

    I followed one suggestion I saw, and even though I don't really understand why it works, it does kind of work. The problem is that the sprite's movement starts fast and then slows, so it's not one consistent movement.

    Could anyone help me to better understand LERP, or explain another way to do this? (though I do really want to learn LERP, as it seems like it's going to be something I have to understand to advance in Construct).

    Honestly, I'd be happy to even have a monthly subscription option. I'd pay $10/month (which is more expensive that paying for a year all at once) to really try it out for a month or two before deciding if I want to pay for a full year.

    At the end of the day, $100 for a year isn't bad, but I don't want to pay because I'm not sure I'll really use it enough to justify the costs. With a buy once model I can use it a bit, then come back to it two years later if I decide to jump back in for a bit. At least a monthly subscription would let me do that, too.

  • Hi all, I've got a weird bug happening. I've set up a player death animation, and I set spacebar to toggle the Player.Dead variable for testing purposes. It's acting inconsistent. If I re-arrange the order of the commands it acts different. But sometimes it will behave differently even without re-arranging the commands.

    I made a video showing it in action. There is no sound. Sorry if I go to vast when showing you the logic - I should have taken more time there, so please pause it if you need to read through it.

  • Hi all, I'm brand new and following along in a basic Platformer tutorial. I'm setting up a behavior for the player to kill the enemy by jumping on him, Mario-like. I've got the beginnings of it set up and working, but I don't know why it works. Right now the player jumps on the enemy and the enemy jumps up. This will be expanded on, but it's the start of his death animation.

    Here's what it looks like:

    This works when the Player.Y is less than Worm_Green.Y-41, but how would I come up with the 41 number? I got it by displaying Worm_Green.Y-Player.Y on collision, and then I jumped on him and noted what was displayed. But how else could I learn this?

    The player is 80x100 and the worm is 48x48.

    Yeah, that's the frustrating part. I've got something really odd happening in a game I'm building (I made another post about it), and it's most likely something I did wrong, but I'm following a tutorial and can't figure out where I went wrong. So it's that question of not knowing if it's my fault (probably since I'm figuring it all out as I go) or a bug that I can't do anything about right now that's killing me.

    Because the obvious temptation is to say, "well, I did this right so it must be a bug." But chances are I did something wrong, and that's no way to learn.

  • Hi all, I am brand new to Construct and am stuck on my first project. I'm more-or-less following a YouTube tutorial on how to create a platformer, but there are a few things not working as intended (in part due to my own deviations from the tutorial).

    The first thing is that I tried to put in a behavior (following exactly along with the tutorial) where, when the player touches a hazard element, his X and Y positions change, as if he is bumped backward. The Y changes just fine, and I can tweak the values to get the desired push back, however the X does not act as expected. Instead, no matter what value I use, the player just gets pushed a very small amount. I've noted it in the file.

    The second thing is that the player is having some collision issues with the bricks I'm using. It seems to happen when he stands in between two bricks. You can clearly see what's happening... he's rapidly going in and out of a jump (or fall?) animation. Additionally (I'm guessing it's the same issue), he gets traction when jumping in to a wall (like the one to your left when the level starts) and can climb up it by moving left. Any idea why that's happening and how to avoid it?

  • The short answer is no, it's most likely not legal, but the worst that will come of it is that you get a cease and desist letter and have to remove it.

    The longer answer involves the Fair Use Doctrine, a four factor balancing test, and so much grey area that lawyers can't even agree on what's legal and not (which is why the courts end up solving these things after lengthy legal battles).

    If it was me, I'd probably just go ahead and upload it for my friends to play with. If I got a cease and desist I would take it down. There's an argument to be made for fair use in a situation like this, but obviously you're not going to get a lawyer and fight Nintendo in court over it.

  • Hi all - I'm brand new to Construct. I have a tiny bit of experience using a Construct competitor (but only a little), and I think I want to make the move to Construct.

    The question is, should I start with Construct 2 since it seems to have lots of tutorials and is really well documented? Or should I jump right in to Construct 3, since it seems to be nearing the end of its beta and is going to be the new thing?

    Will Construct 2 tutorials generally still apply to Construct 3, or is everything completely different now? If I want a basic, idiots-guide kind of overview for Construct 3, where should I start?
