  • Hello. First off, (if I haven't already) I'd like to give my thanks for the tutorial. Anyways, I tried making my own chat application, but I can't get it to work. When I run the server app, type in the port, and click the 'Start Listening' button I get an error.

    Traceback (most recent call last):

    File "<string>", line 3, in <module>

NameError: name 'SysInfo' is not defined

When I click okay it's followed by another error.

    Traceback (most recent call last):

    File "<string>", line 1, in <module>

NameError: name 'myserver' is not defined

I copied and pasted the code from the example chat. The example .cap file works when I run it. That's what I don't get. I exported it to an .exe and imported all the necessary python modules, but I still received error messages. I installed the PodSix library properly too and replaced the .pyc files. Any idea/suggestions?

  • Wow! It runs fine on my machine. This is an interesting concept and I think it has a lot of potential. I can't wait to see more.

    Edit:

My God! I just realized you can land on the planets

  • Some auto-saves or checkpoints would be nice.

  • I can see the crowbar much better now (due to the background change perhaps) and I really like the destructible boxes.

doors are opened by pressing X

Not for me. "X" attacks and "C" opens doors

The doors are a bit tricky too. They don't always open for me. I thought it was because I wasn't standing completely still when trying to open them, but that wasn't it. If they don't open when I press "C", I'll walk away and try again and it usually works. The game crashed once too after I died, but that only happened once so it's fine. Anyways, I look forward to the next update.

  • I'm digging the sprites! But something feels off with the way Gordon jumps; it seems like you fall back to the ground too fast. Maybe that's just me.

Do you start with the crowbar or just your fist? If the answer to that question is the latter, then I'd suggest making the sprite lengthier and extending the reach a bit. Unless it's the former (which I think it is), well then all is well!

I hope you continue to work on this because you're off to a good start!

  • Scidave said he is working on a tutorial, so you should probably wait for that.

  • I'm not sure if I have a favorite. I think it depends on the rest of the game design. EverQuest was one of my favorite games of all time and they used the "traditional" way of leveling up. Elder Scrolls and Ultima Online shared a similar method; you skilled up in whatever you were using. I.E. swinging your sword would increase your sword skill.

With the Elder Scrolls method, I don't really like how the monsters scale depending on your level of skill. As for buying abilities, I think it's fine depending on how it's incorporated into the game. Everquest allowed you to increase certain skills from your guild master's for some gold.

  • My graphics card drivers are up to date. I have DirectX 9, but I updated anyways. Reinstalled Construct, but to no avail. Still isn't working I don't believe it has anything to do with DirectX because when I try to make a regular app it still freezes.

  • Hmm, do any of your other DirectX apps/games crash too, or is it just construct? Is it the exe it creates that crashes, or temp.exe when you do a test in the program? Can you at least run the program, create something, or does it crash during that too?

I'm sure someone else will be able to offer more help, best I can suggest is reinstalling it and make sure DirectX is installed and updated as needed too.

I'm not sure what games I have on here that are using DirectX, but I don't recall any games crashing on me. It's both the exe and the temp.exe that freeze up. I can run and create something fine with no problems. It's only when I try to test it or run it that I have a problem. I'll try reinstalling and making sure my drivers are up to date and get back to you.

  • ATI Radeon HD 4830 512 MB. 2g DDR2 Ram. No error messages, just hard freezes.

  • Hi everyone. I just downloaded construct and I was excited to use it so I started going through the tutorial, "Ghost Shooter", but every time I go to run the game it plays anywhere from 10-50 seconds before freezing. Sometimes the game will unfreeze, but for the most part that usually isn't the case. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and end the task. I tried making another game with just a square that moved with the mouse thinking maybe it had to do with the 8direction movement, but no luck. I'm running Windows XP professional and I have a dual core processor.
