  • Ah yeah it is old. I was just bringing it back up again to ensure its still an active request

I keep dropping hints at Rich, cus Rich is da man! Well, Ash is da man as well, but Rich is like, da plugin man and Ash is DA MAN... ah forget it xD

Can't wait though... full network support via either direct IP connection or windows networking... or mac for those of you unfortunate enough to own one of those atrocities... It will mean I can start working on Car Kill

I think I will finish my current experiment first before starting Car Kill though... probably wait until v1.0 comes out before doing anything too serious.

  • LOL old thread is old... we already talked about this, including you haha. It was in the plugin/sdk request section from memory? This is one thing I am certainly waiting on in order to start my "proper" project, "Car Kill Apocalypse" which I made a thread about ages ago with some mock screen shots in there.

Hopefully once Construct hits 1.0 then Rich and Ash will look into it. I feel that this kind of addition to the program would be essential in order to cover a range of product capabilities... including my idea for a Media Center program, if for example I wanted to have network streaming from other PCs on the network!

  • Well theres an AVI Object but im assuming all it can play is AVI files. So maybe a video object would need to be made? Or possibly make a direct show object use direct show to play videos (I think it's direct show im thinking of).

The only way to get around the codec issue would be to install a codec pack on the system. You could package one of the codec packs available like CCCP or k-lite with your app.

Cool. I was thinking along the lines of having to issue a codec pack with it, mainly because, from what I understand, you have to pay some kind of royalty fee if you want your program to just be able to "play" the required file without any external influence. I use k-lite anyway so it doesn't bother me... in the end I still feel I could make a better Media Center than Microsoft, though I probably wouldn't be able to support TV tuners.

I haven't got Vista Media Centre set up yet, I've got a TV tuner and all that, I generally used to use it for recording stuff (using DVBViewer), but it's one of the things I haven't got round to sorting out yet after installing Vista. Why is it bad exactly? Is it worse/better/the same as XP MCE?

    Well, it's bad for several reasons;

    1. You can't change the wallpaper without changing .cfg files and stuff manually

    2. You can't easily add or remove folders for the same reason

    3. You can't change menu behaviour

    4. You can't "skip" to the next video in a folder unless you "fast foward" to the end and let it kick off the next video that way.

Probably a few more things I can't remember just now... but you get the idea.

It's GOOD in the sense that it works pretty well, doesn't crash etc, but its ugly and you can't easily change/customize it, and it has a few missing features that I would have thought would be standard on something that plays music and videos.

  • Direct sound plays mp3s etc and I think, everything that wmp supports. The problem would come when trying to get the TV part of Media Center made in construct

I guess, but you could always use the execute exe option to simply load your proper tuner software anyway... I'm thinking more along the lines of video/music library system with customisable options like background, folder creation and deletion, changable icons and folder graphics... all things that are a royal pain in the ass with Vista Media Center... if you want to do something as simple as change the wallpaper it is a manual job, editing crap, etc.

Personally I don't use a TV tuner... that's what my TV is for... and this project would be more for personal use anyway, though I would obviously release it etc and at least try to add things that other people might find useful even if I don't.

So aside from Direct sound playing music, how would I go with videos using various codecs etc? Like I said, I haven't even really looked into it since I'm playing with other things in Construct right now... just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone knows or it gives Ash/Rich some ideas.

  • Just a thought I was having with a friend the other day...

We were discussing how much Media Center for Vista sucks, and how cool it would be to make a better one using Construct.

I haven't looked into it much at this stage, but do we have support for MP3 playback, AVI/DivX, etc etc?

If not... is this something we can add support for? It would be awesome to make a Media Center type program to replace that shitty M$ one that's shipped with Vista.

  • So YOU are the one responsible for this madness?!?

  • Nice job. Simple yet effective, and also easily adaptible to triple jump and beyond... even other applications like for example, simulating a character lifting a heavy door where you have to bash the button over and over until it's at the top or else it drops to the grond and you have to start again... etc.

  • Nice plasma effect mate. I've made some weird and wonderful effects myself, all by complete accident. That tool is so.... strangely unpredictable!

  • Try Construct 3

Develop games in your browser. Powerful, performant & highly capable.

Try Now Construct 3 users don't see these ads
  • If you wanted an icon other than the objects appearance, you could create another sprite, set it to invisible, and select it as the parameter in draw terrain. That way it will will only appear on the minimap.

Yep! That is exactly what I did

Now, to go see what deadeye made...

    *EDIT*

Hey that's kinda neat... Sort of paralaxed... but not.

  • Ah right! I was thinking it would be something to do with sin etc.

    I'll investigate

Hell no... Fancy math + me = LOLYEHRITE!

  • Dude how did you do those swurving missiles? I'm trying to make something similar...

    I just made an event

    +Missile is visible

    +Enemy is on screen

    • Missile rotate towards object XY at angle 10

    That's about it

Happy to share the CAP or make a quick example if you can't get it happening.

    ~Sol

  • If I have understood this thread correctly...

I don't see what all the fuss is about really... it's easy enough to just do something like:

bomb hits ground => create bomb radius object (erase shader) => destroy bomb radius object

You can make the "explosion" any shape you want easily, and it takes 2 seconds to make the event to handle every single "bomb" or "bullet" or whatever in the event of destructible terrain.
