If you want a true "beam" then you could always check out the Laser Whip made by Lucid. I think it may have an effect like what you are really looking for, though not so sure on how hard it would be to implement... I haven't checked out the cap admittedly.

For general use, I'd recommend Screen VidShot. It captures desktop and records sounds.

For gaming, most people use Fraps, but the output files it creates are really huge

It creates them uncompressed for maximum quality, but you can easily use Virtual Dub (which is also free) to compress the videos to your favourite format and resolution, including DivX.

This will make any adventure game a snap for those pesky forests and other such adventury type of flora. I guess it would be easy enough to make other plants as well with some after-touch in <insert favourite graphics editing program here>.

Looks enough like a beam to me... but I guess you could make each of the "particles" emmit more particles of thier own, with an additive effect... that would make it look nice and beamy.
