Tom's Forum Posts

This forum is for specific questions relating to how to do certain things in Construct 2. We're running it as a small test but if it works out well we will keep it!

Some tips to get a good response

We are here to help! However, you can make it easier for us, which in turn helps yourself, by remembering a few key points:

    1. We want to help, but we're not here to make your game for you. It's best not to ask too much!

    2. We want to help, but we're also not telepathic. Make sure you clearly describe what you are trying to do, in terms that everyone can understand. Not everyone has played Mega Man, or whatever game you're thinking of, believe it or not. Be sure to mention which browsers you tried as well.

    3. Make an attempt yourself first. Provide a .capx of something you tried. This shows you made an effort, proving that you're not using us as a make-your-game-for-you service, and helps convey what you're trying to do as well.

    4. It can't hurt to say thanks afterwards! A lot of people here are volunteers working in their spare time to kindly offer their help. Showing appreciation is always nice, and you might even get more willing help next time!

    5. Please allow 24 hours for a response. Replying with "can't anyone help?" after 20 minutes could be misconstrued as rudeness, since it is impossible all our forum visitors could have checked the thread in that time. If you're seeing a lot of views and no replies, don't forget we commonly have more search crawlers (e.g. Google) indexing the site than real users, so the views count may be inflated.

    6. Due to heavy spam on the forum, we have to block the posting of links for new users. If your link to the .capx or image is blocked, either remove the http and www parts, or insert * characters through them, e.g.

    example.com/myproject.capx

    or

    h*t*t*p://w*w*w.example.com/myproject.capx

Need a place to put your .capx files online? Try DropBox, Google Drive or OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive).

  • Ashley showed me this a few hours ago. If you are like me or him you will often find yourself at a computer late at night/early in the morning (as I am now!) If you are, this program is incredible (and simple!)

(Obviously download at your own risk). It softens the colours on your screen. It's really, really good. Actually improved my quality of life already!

  • Hi Fimbul!

Thanks for your kind words they do mean a lot to us and we appreciate it :) It's also really great to hear that you are using it for education.

On our store page we say at the bottom:

"If you are an officially recognised and registered School, Charity, University, Library etc where Construct 2 is being used you may use the standard licenses."

If you do not fall strictly into this definition (perhaps you are a private teacher) then please do email us, I'm sure we can work something out for you. We really do recognise the value of what you are doing.

In regards to the free edition, it's perfectly OK to use the free edition for each student, buying a license for each seat is not necessary as long as the games they are making do not break the terms of the license (people profit from them).

Over zealous students may hit the event limit :), if your place of work is interested in bulk purchasing of licenses then please do contact us as we can offer you some good discounts.

In regards to different language interface I have spoken to Ashley about this. At the moment it's planned, but we can't promise any dates this will be implemented. We do want some sort of language file eventually that the community can translate as they wish but again no promises on time for delivery.

I hope that answers your queries!

  • Ah ok sorry I didn't read it as a joke at first <img src="smileys/smiley1.gif" border="0" align="middle" />

  • Hi DropTank,

I've added an AJAX tutorial on my to do list!

  • Yes, the PHP file can be located anywhere it doesn't have to be the same page the game is located on. But the client still needs to send data to the PHP page, there is always going to be a gap between the client and the server.

  • Hah that was pretty cool. If you're interested in maths, Alexes Adventures in Numberland:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alexs-Adventures-Numberland-Alex-Bellos/dp/0747597162

Is an super good book and has a great chapter on Pi!

  • It's ok Tokinsom, it's a legitimate newsworthy thing to post.

Like Ash said, we think GM is flawed especially in regards to HTML5. If you are going to learn a scripting language to make HTML5 games - why not learn Javascript? We want to make Construct 2 mainly targeted to non programmers.

It does seem that a lot of things are stirring and cogs are starting to move in YoYo games, will be interesting to see what happens. But our confidence in our product remains steadfast!
