  • I saw this suggestion

    Condition

Target object - pick by Unique ID

If the object you are trying to reach is a Sprite named "lol"

    =>

lol - Pick by Unique ID

But when I attempt to pick by the Instance text name (eg Bob) I get the error "This is not a system expression or variable name in this scope"

Edit: Ok, I think I have picking the instance by name working, but now I don't know what to do with it.

  • I've read through the "picking" and "dialogue" FAQs, as well as the Conditions wiki... but I still am not sure what to do.

Problem: I'm giving each npc custom dialogue

So, I'd like to be able to set something like:

    Player OnCollision with NPC.Instance1...

    Or even with distance

    distance(Player.X,Player.Y,NPC_Instance1.X,NPC_Instance1.Y)

But I can't see an easy way set/call an NPC instance. I've currently got the instance variable set to "text" where I give each NPC a unique name.

I'm going to keep playing around, but I thought I'd ask while I was busy stumbling around.

  • I found the original youtube link, so I'm good to go. Still a bit curious why it didn't load, but no big deal. :)

  • Hi Wink,

Sorry, I'm just getting around to this tutorial. However, when I load the page, the tutorial is blank. There's probably something really obvious I'm missing, but I don't know what. I'm running firefox 10.0.2

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

  • Ah, great to know. Thanks for the reply!

(Also, I have to say I'm having a blast with this program :))

  • I know dialogue and distance have been discussed, but I wanted to get input on the best way to solve this problem.

Problem: I'd like to be able to interact with 50+ NPCs (individually) whenever I'm within X pixels of a given NPC.

I've see that we can use the distance expression to determine how close an instance is (distance(x1, y1, x2, y2)).

I've also seen someone suggest creating an invisible sprite that is pinned to the NPC and use the "Overlapping" condition.

Are either of these the best way considering the number of NPCs?

edit: I should note, my dialogue is very simple. Each NPC will only have 1 or 2 lines.

  • Awesome, thank you. I was searching for "start menu" so "title screen" didn't come up :)

Level loading: I figured it would be something like that, but I couldn't find it in the manual. I didn't realize you could load multiple layouts in that way. (yes, I'm very new to this :P)

edit: This post looks perfect, thanks again. I see now there were a lot of tutorials listed in the sticky that simply I missed!

  • Hi Guys,

I tried to search but couldn't find what I'm looking for.

I was curious how to do two things.

    1) A simple start menu. It would contain 2-3 options. Start, About, and possibly 1 more (maybe Help or Controller Map)

    2) I couldn't find a simple explanation about loading another level. For example, if you hit a warp portal or door or simply want to load into a different level (or, I guess in the case of question one, loading the actual game from the start menu "level").

If there's tutorials for either of these, that would be great.

    Thanks!

  • I'm glad the issue wasn't just me :). Really excited to try this product when I found it, but when I attempted the tutorial I crashed on the first step "inserting a tiled background".

Repro is as described: simply close the texture editor after choosing the "tiled background" option to experience the crash.
