  • How do you guys handle things like smoke puffs, contact graphics, explosions, particles, powerup acquisition, save game effects, etc? They're probably the hardest thing for me to do, but conversely I find them most fun. Also, when done well, they can look fantastic and make a game.

    Thoughts?

Got the treasure menu functional. What doya think?

(also fer christ sake's ignore the fact the character is mario, it's temporary)

  • Cool, thanks for the tip! I found a real good one in the tutorials.

  • By this, I mean a camera that will scroll the length of the room (whatever size that may be), then jump to the next one whenever the player goes offscreen. It's hard to explain unless you've played metroid, though I did make some (buggy) progress.

Can I get some help fixing this? I found an example earlier, but you'd have to define the length of the room each time, which is pretty obnoxious and it didn't work all that great. Oh, and if you want to see the bugs I'm talking about, jump between screens for a bit without leaving the borders

    Thanks guys.

Kickass man! The graphics are nicely made, and you also seem to have a decent handle on game design. Though, the town seems... underpopulated? Not that it even needs more people, but maybe chickens or something running around.

    Regardless, keep it up.

  • Exactly what the title says. I've searched through the manual and a few tutorials and I've found nothing, though it's such a useful feature I pray that I may be missing something. If not, however, maybe there is a plugin?

    Thanks my friends!

  • Man, I love your graphical style. Articulate and interesting.

Love the sprites man! Though, that blood shooting eye reminds me of the ones from rogue legacy

Hmm, I have no idea what you're talking about, so I think I may be misunderstanding what the ampersand command is actually used for. So to clarify, is there anyway that I can use an object's instance variable IN expressions?

EDIT: I'm new to this, so the jargon escapes me. How about a picture?

See, I want to use the instance variable's value (whatever it may be for the current object) there (or wherever).

  • Hey all, I'm making a metroidvadian here and I figured, in order to teleport to a specific layout, I would use a sprite with a text instance variable "location". On contact, I planned to make the sprite teleport the player to wherever the instance variable is set to go to (e.g. "location" is set to "cave", therefore it will teleport the player to the layout named "cave"). However, it appears that the ampersand operator cannot be used for instance variables.

Is there some way I can use instance variables like so? If not, is there a workaround? Thanks!

Yeah, I see what you mean my friend. Though, introducing yourself is far more awesome when you get a nice greeting from one of the site's regulars!

Regardless, I may as well introduce myself correctly now. I'm allowiscous, and while I don't have any experience in proper game development, I have been modifying SNES ROMS for 6 or so years. Because of that, I like to believe that I have a pretty decent handle on game, level, graphic, and music design.

Construct 2 seemed like a powerful and intuitive editor, plus it (seems) to have an active and helpful community. I can't wait to get started.

  • You know, I want to legitimately introduce myself here, but it seems like the only people that actually frequent this thread are the new users who are also introducing themselves! Where are all the friendly greeters who lube up the scary entrance to a new community?!
